The state government shouldn't add words to the state constitution to the for the sake of latchkey kids. That should really be the realm of social services (which I believe should be private/church sponsored, not government sponsored if we lived in a perfect small government world).

You're right that it says that marriage doesn't need to be taught, but then says that if it sex ed is taught (which 96% of schools choose to do) that marriage must be taught. Therefore, the end result is that 96% of California schools teach marriage because they teach sex ed.
And to be fair, gay marriage would have to be acknowledge and upon acknowledging gay unions as marriage, our kids will be led to the conclusion that it's okay for gay couples to marry like traditional couples.

as you might have been led to believe.Besides, if you read another part of the Education code you quoted:
Instruction shall encourage communication between students and their families...
I'm sure you're a very good father, and when your child comes home and tells you that he/she learned about marriage, you'll be able to teach them YOUR specific beliefs, and show them the "right" teachings (according to your religious beliefs). Who are you to think you have the right to impose YOUR religious beliefs on me? In some lands, they consider that terrorism, as the more radical sects of some religions require that EVERYONE join their religion or face execution... so JIHAD AWAY!!!

i've seen people mention "tax benefits" several times in this thread. could someone please explain to me what tax benefits there are in regards to being married?
as for medical benefits, every employer i've worked for over the last 5~10 years has offered shared benefits to "domestic partners".

You are right, I don't have the right to impose my beliefs on you. But I do have the right to vote for what I beleive is right and discuss it.
That's why marriage shouldn't be related to government in the first place. It is as it always has been, a religious ceremony.
But Americans decided that they wanted it taught in school, which is why it is taught in school. If you don't want it to be, start a movement to remove tradtitional marriage from sex ed.
As for the other part of the education code, I read it and acknowleged it as well. I think that part is great.
I'm no homophob so there is no
factor in any of this for me. I'm not here to judge them and I really don't care what they do in public or behind closed doors.
I'm voting to keep marriage as it has been defined for the past 2,000+ years. And just because something has been done for a long time does not mean that it is right, but marriage was created as between a man and a woman and the world has naturally continued this tradition and stood by it's meaning since the begining of time.

so marriage is a religious ceremony? would that mean that a couple would HAVE to be active participants in a religion that practices marriage in order to get married?
