Oh $*#@ bag, do you have one?
since this is a pissing contest for emergency packs, why not just live in an underground blast bunker with 100 years supply of water and food, and just never emerge - you'll be 100% safe F O R E V E R, and without all this safety backpack hassle bs. this is america - go big or go home right? if you were a true safety bad *** that's what you'd do
i know someone will be offended with this post so i'll just preempt that by saying i'm totally kidding. i know i know "i'll be sorry when an actual disaster happens and regret that i ever said this"

if you have a steady job, consider placing a $20 bill each month in a safe BUT EASY to get to place at home.
think ATMs will be full or even operating after a major event happens?
another thing to consider: communications. no you cell phones will be jammed. land lines? probably better. so if you think VONAGE will be around after an EQ hits, think again.
now, on the risk of being hammered, you may wanna think about ham radio. technically no one without ham radio license can operate them, but the FCC does allow people to use any and all means to communicate if a true emergency exists...
i recently bought a cheap ham radio made in china, that is 1/3 the price of a name branded one.
in fact, the 2 meter/70cm radio i bought was around $110. a single band can be had for around $60.
reason i went with this was last time we had a power outage, when i came home and turned on my yaesu handheld radio, the battery was dead.
well, that was unacceptable... but i didnt have another $400 for another yaesu radio, but found the chinese made ones.
while we are at, might as well get your ham radio license and learn the proper way of using these radios. it's costs about $14 to take a test...

All I need to do is get to Sausalito, we got a 35ft sailboat that stocked. Even got inflatable stills to make fresh water from sea water if we need too, we'll be fishing yellow tail off the coast of the channel islands or san carlos while you landlocked guys kill each other over rats and water
