Yes, please! The only reason I haven't freaked out too much about not having a kit is because my parents have one and I live within walking distance of their place... But I'm moving across the country so I really should put one together and I'm just not sure what to include. Great idea
1 roll duct tape (Gorilla brand is a great waterproof stuff)
1 pair jeans
2 shirts 1 long sleeve 1 short
2 pair socks
1 towel
1 good quality flash light (5 watt, LED, home depot has them for under $20)
1 pair of gloves, leather, be sure to treat them with mink oil before you pack them.
1 small box of ziplock baggies
1 box of 3 non lubricated condoms (can be used to waterproof wounds, hold small parts, and in a pinch to protect a broken finger. )
2-3 candy bars (I have found snickers tend to last the longest)
3-5 dry food bars (REI has them for a good price)
4-6 water packets (again REI)
50 foot nylon rope (home depot, about $10)
5 50 gallon outdoor trash bags folded up tightly (can be used as a pauncho, to carry things, to slide on, and even to sleep under)
1 good knife (don't cheap out here, quality is key)
1 good multi tool (leatherman, or other brand. I personally carry SOG)
1 small first aid kit (home depot, $10, just needs the basics)
Now on top of that, if you have any medications you need. I would suggest packing in 3 days worth, along with a paper that lists all your medical problems, needs and such. Pack the paper into a ziploc bag to protect it.
Remember that things like food, water, and medications (and condoms) you will want to swap out once a year for fresh stuff. The whole kit can be put together in one day, will cost you under $100 (including clothing), and should fit nicely in the spare tire well.
I might suggest you put in $10 roll of quarters and $10 in $1 bills too. The coins can be used for other things besides money, and it will give you a emergency fund to get to if you need it.
All in all keep in mind, what can I use this for? Items that can do 4-5 jobs are better than 1 use items.
let me give you a little senerio that can, and did play out during Katrina.
8.3 Earthquake hits the bay area, cuts off water and food to 70% of the people in the area. It is going to take 3-5 days for groups like FEMA to get fresh water production up and running strong. By day 2, people are going to be in fight or flight mode, you WILL have looting and worse.
The fact is, people, like yourself who are not prepared, are going to try and take from people like myself that are. Will I protect what I have with lethal force...you better damn believe it. When it comes down to it, my family/friends are more important to me than your life is, and I will do what must be done to protect them tell help can come or we can get out of the area to our evac spot (a ranch up north of the bay friends/family are all to meet at)

That being said, an emergency bag is always a good idea. I just don't think your example is borne out by history.

Were you here for the '89 Loma Prieta 7.1 earthquake? Absolutely none of what you described came even close to happening. Nor did that happen after the 1906 San Francisco 7.9 earthquake -- an earthquake which, as I'm sure you know, obliterated the city because of the fires afterwards.

Lets look at katrina, you had by day 3, people looting anything they could, you had the cops invading private citizens homes and taking guns/food, you had hospitals being abandoned, and you had people killing their neigbors for food/clean water.
Its not far from that to the bay area falling apart man, don't kid yourself.
Loma Prieta didn't do the damage a 8+ is going to do, and 1906 was a long, long time ago. I am sure a few people took advantage of things, history has a way of glossing over the truth.

And trust me, I'm well aware of the fragility of society. One only need look outside the U.S. for examples of the thin facade falling apart under even the slightest pressure. However, U.S. society is drastically different than most of the rest of the planet -- I firmly believe that most people here are too fat, lazy and soft to expend the energy required for a full on riot.
Dude! You have to help me set up a bag one day! Makes me want to build an old model lifted forester now and go redneck asian on punk asses!!
Fosho man, well dont come talking to me when a zombie bites ur ***.
Man.... you have way too much faith for humanity lol.
That being said... I just got this to say, Yo dawg we around Oakland!! Do you hear me?? You saw what broke out because of a trial......what do you think is going to happen when the pavement starts cracking?? ****** are gong to go ape **** style on everything. Farthest cities are the safest from the rampage.

yeah, theres nothing wrong with being prepared. but handguns, shotguns, and rifles?? really? what are you gonna do, shoot the earthquake or fire? and yes we know overbear youre a crazy badass former gang member from the streets of compton who will protect your family with lethal force?
Your point on the damage difference is valid, as each whole number increase in magnitude represents an intensity increase of 10 times. No doubt it would be a difficult situation, but I still think your example of how the Bay Area would fall apart is hyperbolic.
