You mean like in the first paragraph of that link?

The Richter magnitude scale, also known as the local magnitude (ML) scale, assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude (shaking amplitude) of the largest displacement from zero on a particular type of seismometer (Wood–Anderson torsion). So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0. The effective limit of measurement for local magnitude ML is about 6.8.

Note: You were talking about the energy released. I was talking about the shaking amplitude. Two different measurements.

1 roll duct tape (Gorilla brand is a great waterproof stuff)
1 pair jeans
2 shirts 1 long sleeve 1 short
2 pair socks
1 towel
1 good quality flash light (5 watt, LED, home depot has them for under $20)
1 pair of gloves, leather, be sure to treat them with mink oil before you pack them.
1 small box of ziplock baggies
1 box of 3 non lubricated condoms (can be used to waterproof wounds, hold small parts, and in a pinch to protect a broken finger. )
2-3 candy bars (I have found snickers tend to last the longest)
3-5 dry food bars (REI has them for a good price)
4-6 water packets (again REI)
50 foot nylon rope (home depot, about $10)
5 50 gallon outdoor trash bags folded up tightly (can be used as a pauncho, to carry things, to slide on, and even to sleep under)
1 good knife (don't cheap out here, quality is key)
1 good multi tool (leatherman, or other brand. I personally carry SOG)
1 small first aid kit (home depot, $10, just needs the basics)

Now on top of that, if you have any medications you need. I would suggest packing in 3 days worth, along with a paper that lists all your medical problems, needs and such. Pack the paper into a ziploc bag to protect it.

Remember that things like food, water, and medications (and condoms) you will want to swap out once a year for fresh stuff. The whole kit can be put together in one day, will cost you under $100 (including clothing), and should fit nicely in the spare tire well.

I might suggest you put in $10 roll of quarters and $10 in $1 bills too. The coins can be used for other things besides money, and it will give you a emergency fund to get to if you need it.

All in all keep in mind, what can I use this for? Items that can do 4-5 jobs are better than 1 use items.
You forgot spare batteries. I carry spares in waterproof cases like this one:

In theory shouldn't I than have the same type of bag in multiple locations; home, work, car, frequent clients, etc and carry something on me all the time? If an earthquake hits, its a good possibility that one bag will not be inaccessible for 2 or 3 days...I park at BART and take train everywhere, so I highly doubt there would much left of my car once the parking structure collapses

thats because i read past the first paragraph

Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released, and each increase of 0.2 corresponds to a doubling of the energy released.

All I need to do is get to Sausalito, we got a 35ft sailboat that stocked. Even got inflatable stills to make fresh water from sea water if we need too, we'll be fishing yellow tail off the coast of the channel islands or san carlos while you landlocked guys kill each other over rats and water

Apparently by "read past the first paragraph" you mean "didn't read it," otherwise you would have known my statement wasn't wrong.

I didn't use Wikipedia as my source, I used the USGS and went with the shaking amplitude because: A. that's what we actually feel, and B. the energy measurement is just an estimate:

For example, a magnitude 5.3 might be computed for a moderate earthquake, and a strong earthquake might be rated as magnitude 6.3. Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; as an estimate of energy, each whole number step in the magnitude scale corresponds to the release of about 31 times more energy than the amount associated with the preceding whole number value.
Edit: Various edits in an attempt to be less snarky than IX.

So with all that stuff packed in your "Go Bag", I'm just curious as to what you guys are going to be running on your 1st and 2nd line gear when it's time to bug out.
