This was a special brew to celebrate 250 years in business, beginning in 1759. You would have to find some old stock.

So apparently just because it's a German import doesn't mean it's automatically superior than other domestic craft beers....

Recent tries:

Pliny the Elder - it IS good. A lot has to do with the smells.
Friends Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot - loved this one. Nutty, IPA with hints of spices.
Allegash Curieux - heavenly. Freakin high ABV and is like a cross between a beer and a wine.
New Belgium Trippel - very pleasant and love the coriander

PBR - holy **** this is ****. If it's better than bud, it ain't much better.

Glad you found some! It is hard to find, and seasonal. I buy it out whenever I see it, and I'm down to 3 bombers. Their single hop Citra is good, as is their Hoptologist.

Homebrewers: any of you ever do an imperial stout? Subquestion: have any of you done any barrel aging?

I was trying to get all the home brewers together to fill a barrel in one session but it kinda petered out.

Anyone around East bay know where I can pick up some Doghead Chicory Stout? It tasted like beer and coffee had a bastard child and it was delicious... I had it on the east coast and miss it so...

I tried mixing bud light and coffee together but didn't get the same result...

I have. It's tasty. Not as heavy as the stout, but not light.

Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot

I actually got a barrel as well, but it never seemed like anything was happening with it, so I gave it to my buddy. It is now aging a brown flemish sour ale.

I can get more casks though. These will "usually" be the normal massive fockers at around 35-55gal. These will be French oak usually, but there are variations, and will have been used for aging red wine (Cab, Zin and a few blends of such). With a full size cask, would have to be around at least 5-10 normal home-brews. I am not sure if you are talking about what I am talking about, (Willis) but back when we were talking about it - the theme was take one recipe - say a fairly middle-of-the-road English IPA, and have all of us brew it up, then blend into a cask and glass-secondary the residuals for a taste-off down the road. Seems like it would be rad to say the least, however I have ended up without room or gear to brew sadly. Still down for the taste-off!

Aaaaaaaaanyway, I have been thoroughly enjoying Deschutes' "Chasin' Freshies" IPA. It's in their fresh hop series, along with my favorite beer, which is their seasonal release of Hop Trip. If you're like me, and I know I am, you love Mirror Pond. Hop Trip is a lot like Mirror Pond but uses super fresh hops (like they pick them, and then bust *** to the brewery and dump them in the brew in a matter of hours). The Chasin' Freshies is not hoppy at all, but it's super tasty and 7.4% ABV.

Also, I am pretty excited to see Sierra's Anniversary Ale out as it's one of my all time favs, but the sixxer I got tastes nasty like too much yeast. Have to keep trying...

Also, Pudley's in San Carlos is RAD and they are having a pint night for Alaskan beers tonight. I have so many pint glasses from this place when I used to live near there, the brewery dude would give me a glass, a shirt and tell me I couldn't play. They do a raffle where you buy the beer, keep the glass and get a ticket - then they raffle off shirts, openers, and other swag through-out the night. They also have Drake's Denogginizer on tap or did last time I was there. Wife and I are heading down probably around 6:30 or so to check out the beers tonight and such but we will be with our 2yr old so may only be able to chug a few beers before needing to head out. This place is great though - food is really good and they have 23 or so beers on tap (including Racer5, Mirror Pond, Big Daddy).

My favorite pub these days in the area is the Rose & Crown in Palo Alto. They have Pliny on tap constantly, and put a cask of Racer5 on the beer engine around 4pm usually. Great food and they are close to PA CalTrain. Can't lose!

Favorite Pale Ale lately is English Ale's 1066 Pale. They have it on tap at Camelot Fish n Chips in Pacifica, which is a fun spot for a snack in any event!

My favorite pub over-all is "The Alehouse" in Reading, UK. It's so great it's worth the trip! I just got back again and I miss it already. Next September is their 30 year anniversary so it's probably going be a bit mad and awash with tossers - always fun.

Bud Light being the problem there... Red Hook used to have one that had Starbucks in it and it wasn't bad.
