Wait a sec, BJJ practitioners get to compete (in non-MMA tournaments) without gi now?! Isn't that basically luta livre but without advanved takedowns and lower body locks/holds?!

Yep, at least at the Gracie Open. I don't know what lutra livre is.. but in the Advanced Divisions takedowns and lower body locks and holds are fine.

Wow, BJJ's evolved a bit I guess

Luta Livre is the Portugese word for wrestling, but in Brazil it's a grappling style that's a bit more than just Greco-Roman wrestling. Luta livre guys don't wear gi either.

I heard about it, but I didn't see it. It's a shame what's happened to Akebono: the first foreign yokozuna and a true sumo great who's been reduced to first mixed martial arts and now (shudder) pro wrestling. Especially sad considering his poor performance in K-1, makes me feel kinda bad for him. But I wanna see the Wrestlemania match anyway!!

The big ones around here are shotokan (obviously ), kenpo, goju, and Okinawan styles like shorin-ryu.
Looks like I'll have to do some research into it, unless someone would care to provide a link to an info page for me
I don't think I've noticed kyokushin in K-1 recently either. Most of the fighters seem to favor kickboxing techniques, whether it's Muay Thai (yeah!), savate, or homegrown variations (e.g. Ernesto Hoost's Dutch style). Unless... Satake Masaaki wasn't kyokushin, was he? I sure hope he wasn't hehehehe.... because if you remember Satake, you sure wouldn't want him to represent your style internationally LOL
Late to this post.... Anyone have any recommendations for a traditional Okinawan karate school? I studied Shorin-ryu in traditional school a number of years ago. Thinking of picking up again.

John

It was indeed an awesome fight. I was happy to see they gave them both contracts. I also did not know that
most of the other cast members had fights that night as well. The title fight was a bit of a let down but
that is ok because the light heavyweights stole the show.

hes not exactly into pro wrestling.....it just stems from the show of respect to him from the Big Show when they were in Japan earlier this year.....

at least, i think hes not a pro wrestler...........

Yeah, I eventually saw the highlights... it was an informal sumo match. At least Akebono didn't turn into the next Yokozuna (not the rank, but the fat WWF guy from the nineties )

mojo: Gimme a bit of time and I'll see what I can in terms of Okinawan style for you

+1

I'm glad Forrest got a contract too, I was routing for him the whole time anyway. But yeah, that fight was bad azz! I watched the show at 6 on satallite at a friends house and went home and watched it again at 9 on cable..
