Have you looked in to Krav Maga? it's pretty cool, there just isn't a dojo around here or I'd take it - 1st DAN in one year if you go 3 times a week and practice.
There is a Krav-Maga Training center in Santa Clara. Website: http://www.academyselfdefense.com/

Yeah, I've heard about Krav Maga, there's a center on Bush St. here in S.F. A very street effective style, combative "overkill" techniques you could say
I'm not looking to be a yudansha (black belt holder) at all, it's just that I'm somewhat skeptical about overly detailed ranking systems in general. I like Muay Thai and boxing's system, where rank is determined by win loss ratio and championships won. For the sake of seeing how fluent a student is, maybe the traditional karate system of just white-black or white-brown-black is the most that I can see as justifiable. Kano Jigoro's system of a rainbow of belts just doesn't appeal to me, especially in commercialized, money-grubbing McDojo's that are rampant today. If the system was really that effective in establishing fighters, that would mean that black belts would lose only to other black belts right? Or that black belts should be black belts no matter what dojo they transfer to right (at least within reason, a la different schools of the same style as opposed to completely different styles)? I mean no disrespect, it's just that I guess the system isn't right for me.

August 14th, 1pm, anyone?
I know I posted the link before, but I wanted to see if anyone is interested...

Sounds like a friendly get-together of MA's who want to spar/grapple or work on techniques.
"The NorCal McThrowdown/Pattycakefest is finally go! It will be held Sunday, August 14th from 1pm to 5pm at Modern Combatives' new location in Berkeley, CA.
The last few NorCal Throwdowns have been awesome. Most of the participants to date have only been training a year or two, so no one should be intimidated into not showing up.
More details: Anyone hoping to show they're a badass by leaving their bruised and bloodied opponents mewling for mommy is going to be disappointed. For insurance reasons, don't plan on any all-out, full-contact MMA fighting. That means this won't qualify as an "Official Bullshido Throwdown" (TM), and no one's going to be getting an "I'm not only a keyboard warrior" fist icon by their name for coming.
However, you should plan on lots and lots of medium-contact MMA sparring. (Anyone wanting to kick it up a notch will be highly encouraged to put on boxing gloves, and anyone wanting to drop it down a notch will not be laughed at. Until the videos are posted.)
Also, you must absolutely, positively, wear a mouthguard and a cup (dudes). MMA gloves, boxing gloves, shinguards, headgear, elbow pads, knee pads, etc are all highly recommended. I'll also have my gi because I can only stand getting hit in the head for so long.
Now... Roll call! Who's in?"

So what ever happened to OLMEK?
That's right! I scared him off after proving him and his father were frauds to this entire forum. Good times... good times...
Sorry everyone! Just trying to re-live a bitter-sweet moment.

Whoa, there's togakure ryu in the States?!
Isn't that the style from Iga, the Hattori family's style?!
I'm just kinda curious how ninjutsu training would be conducted here?
