*Edit - Looked it up and sure enough there are restrictions.

I walked in and asked if they had any 22 in stock. He said, "yea, but only if you're 21."

So I don't see a specific law right off the bat, but I saw on Calguns that there are restrictions on handgun caliber ammo, and .22lr would be a handgun caliber.

Afterwards, i went to big 5 and bought myself a brick of 22 though. What i don't get is why would Hunters Supply in Salinas sell rifles in .22lr but they won't let me buy the ammo to shoot it.

Anyone live in Sunnyvale?

Anti-gun Sunnyvale City Council members placed “Measure C” on the ballot for the November 5 election. Two of the four provisions in Measure C are already codified in state law and the other two were VETOED by Governor Jerry Brown this year.

If passed, Measure C would do the following:

Ban possession of ammunition magazines that hold more ten rounds and not allow the grandfathering of currently owned ammunition magazines. California already bans the sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than ten rounds BUT you are now grandfathered if you owned those ammunition magazines prior to 2000 – unless Measure C passes. State legislation was introduced this year for this requirement and it failed to pass. The California Sheriffs’ Association is also opposed to this requirement.

Require the registration of all ammunition purchases including a thumbprint! State legislation was introduced this year for this requirement and it failed pass. The Governor also vetoed similar legislation in 2012 and litigation is currently pending on this issue.

Require the so-called “safe storage” of all of your firearms, meaning they must be locked-up at all times when not in use. California already has some of the strictest firearm storage laws.

Require the reporting of lost and stolen firearms and would penalize gun owners for failing to report their lost or stolen gun within 48 hours. This state requirement was vetoed by Governor Brown this year and in 2012. To view Governor Brown’s 2013 veto letter, please click here.

Measure C is being disguised as a gun safety ordinance to make the citizens of Sunnyvale feel safer but nothing in Measure C will reduce California and Sunnyvale’s crime rate. Criminals are not thwarted by gun control laws. Those intent on misusing firearms and committing crimes, also known as violent criminals, obtain firearms through theft or illegal transfers. Measure C will ONLYaffect and punish law-abiding citizens. VOTE NO on MEASURE C on November 5!
FYI, note too that if passed, this law applies not only to residents but anyone traveling through the city as well.

Sunnyvale sucks.
I almost got arrested outside of reeds in santa clara by officer saveahoe.
When i first bought a rifle and didnt know the specific laws.
Shotgun is unloaded, open action with trigger lock in an unlocked case inside of a locked tonneau cover....and i almost went to jail. But i can have an unlocked firearm of my choice in a locked bag in the cab of the car just out of reach.

And to anyone who knows why the pistol range was closed @ los altos until they redid the backing on the hill.....its cause i was hit with a ricochet about a year ago!!!!! And all i got was 2 free passes....lol.

Hmm...not that you want to really argue that sort of thing with a cop usually, but long guns are not required to be locked AFAIK, only *concealable* guns and "assault" weapons. I've been told though that if a cop wants to be a d1ck, you will definitely lose the argument, so don't argue with them - even to state the law since it isn't a traffic ticket at risk.

And the guys inside reeds were all standing by the door looking out the window the whole time! They said basically the same thing as you, well its a grey area....but you dont want to argue....

I'm sure that like S.F. and other cities attempting this the law will be held up in court. I believe that there is state pre-emption so they can suck it.

So all they did was ban prebans?
That didnt accomplish much seeing as 90% of ar owners have 30 rounders they keep stashed until SHTF.
Everyone knows to carry their 10 rounders to the range

Yes, preban AND kits that convert to hi-cap are banned. Both SF and Sunnyvale have had suits filed against them, but they are already signed into LAW in those cities so on Jan 1, they go into effect regardless of legal action. Only applies to those cities though, not all of CA; the same things were vetoed for the state. Trust me, if that passed for the state, a lot of people would have been moving out of the state.
