If you drive with your head out of your butt the RE's aren't complete wastes. Better than the RE070's..haaaaa.
If you want a tire that you can run all year round I'd say I like my Proxe 4's. The Pzero Neros are hands down the best though. Few others are worth mentioning as well.
If you want dedicated snow tires...try blizzaks. They make one that's designed for what you're talking about..not some burly 4x4 tire. Think it's the LM-25...do a search on Tirerack. They have some great reviews of snow tires.
I've run RE070's, RE92's, Toyo Proxe 4's and Falken 512's in the snow on my car. I'm still alive. Just drive within your abilities.

KDWSs are also a great RallyX tire compared to the rest.

YEA! A friend came back from Reno a few days ago and there was a mild storm. Traffic slowed to 20-25 mph. Crossing my fingers for a Oct 31 opening day! =)

Once they have coverage just head right for the double-black-diamonds (Hangman's Hollow). A lot more above tree line boarding at Mammoth. There are tree runs of course but not as much as you would think.

Heading out to colorado sounds real fun.
FWIW Vail was voted #6 overall resort in Transworld Snowboarding. But then again N* is cool but not great and they got #5.
