Are you talking about a "ski lease" (i.e. something for the entire season)? Or are y'all looking for a place for a week -OR- weekend? Also, North shore or South Lake?

Just for fun.
Opening day as posted on their respective websites
Mammoth: Nov. 8
Heavenly: Nov. 16
Squaw: Nov. 17
Kirkwood: Nov. 24
All dates depends on conditions of course.
Do any of you guys carry chains in your suby when you go? Want to recommend a cheap/decent pair. I know with awd we probably won't see them but someone told me all vehicles are required to carry them.
Also, anyone from the Bay Area plan to run snow tires on their suby? Can you recommend a pair that doesn't get eaten up too easily w/ all the freeway driving that most of us will be doing to get there.

Thats what I want to know too! I only seem to hear horror stories about these RE92's and might not want to risk running them on my drives up to Lake Tahoe.

If you want a tire that you can run all year round I'd say I like my Proxe 4's. The Pzero Neros are hands down the best though. Few others are worth mentioning as well.
If you want dedicated snow tires...try blizzaks. They make one that's designed for what you're talking about..not some burly 4x4 tire. Think it's the LM-25...do a search on Tirerack. They have some great reviews of snow tires.
I've run RE070's, RE92's, Toyo Proxe 4's and Falken 512's in the snow on my car. I'm still alive. Just drive within your abilities.

I use Cooper Weather Masters all winter long. They are specifically snow tires and perform great in snow, decently in rain, and sh!ty around the bay. This will be my third season on them and they still have plenty of tread left.
As long as you don't drive too aggressively on them while commuting they last for a long time.

I think we all are.
Would anyone be interested in going to mammoth for opening day?
A friend and I have talked about renting a car and going for the weekend. nov 10-11.
We're both beginners if skill level matters to you.

Road trip for beginners?
How beginner...like never been or like you stick to the groomers????
If it's a never been or you have a hard time getting down the hill Mammoth is a waste. Go to tahoe. Get a place..you can gamble at night...etc. Buy a package that comes with lessons. Have fun. Spend just as much money as you'd spend in mammoth and not have to drive as far.
Save the road trip for later in the season when you can actually enjoy mammoth.

beginner as in I can get down the mountain ok on the groomers. Haven't tried the back country runs or big powder runs.
Can't do jumps/tricks.
Mammoth is an idea right now simply because it opens 2 weeks before tahoe or at least at the moment it is scheduled to be.
