Sounds like Devils Canyon would be a good time. Fridays are a no go until I get a change in my work schedule though.

Thanks!
Devil's Canyon is fun times. I have known those people for a long time - they are right across the street from a family business. I am walking distance so I try to hit the Fridays. Just saw Jeff (from HP) and he spoke highly of you btw.

Matt - what do you think about an ale aged in a used wine cask? I can't decide if it would be asstasstic or a good thing and am not sure I want to invest time/energy in that much beer if it may suck. My brother in law makes wine and uses these awesome oak casks, and they can only use them a couple times. Devil's Canyon grabbed some a while back for some experimental thing but I haven't heard anything about it.

Really? I will have to check it out - they have loads of it at the Sunnyvale BevMo as well as all the other nice editions in the porcelain containers (the Imperial IPA is very nice...). That place is pretty awesome. They have Deschutes' "Twilight Ale" which is hard to find as well as the Red Chair IPA and a whole bunch of other stuff. They have Sierra's "Estate Ale" which I want to try as well as the Hemisphere which uses hops from New Zealand. It's like a toystore for me, I just go in and wander around sometimes.

I read a good recipe for "hop chicken" that I'm going to try with some leftover hops that are in the freezer.
If you want to try that with fresh, whole flower hops I will have some in a bit you can just have.

Forgot to mention this, but it might be fun for a birthday thing - Devil's Canyon does a thing called "Brew on Premises" where you use their recipe book, ingredients, equipment and work with their brewers to brew your own, all grain brew and then you keg it and take it home w/ a keg setup (tanks/tap - no pump!). Might be worth checking out, especially if you have experience brewing - then it would be a blast!

I decided to pick it up because you spoke highly of the brewery in general, and I heard an interview with the brewer and it sounded really good.

I'll have to try that next time I'm near BevMo.

Hmm, Russian River uses french oak wine barrels for their Temptation ale and it is supposed to give it "distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak" after aging for a year. If you can wait that long (I know I couldn't) it'd probably taste good for a stout or pale ale.

I want to try it so I can get rid of the small amounts of a few different varieties I have in the freezer. Figured I'd do something with them rather than just toss them out.

I know I've seen it at BevMo before, and I think it was the price that deterred me.

Jacob, the Mirror Pond is pretty good! I love Cascade hops though, so that may be what is doing it for me. It definitely would have been overpowered by the pizza if I had it with dinner. (The DGA made an amazing tasting crust).

So, a bit frustrating, but I made a special trip to BevMo for DDGA and the 13th Ale and they don't have the 13 I've only found it at Whole Foods so far, and I was SO looking forward to the lucky number goodness...Oh well.

my gf has a sidejob as a waitress at a fairly high-end eatery... as a result this weekend i've had two beers that were less than stellar, but cost me more than i would've liked...

i'm having selective amnesia with the first, but i ordered it when i went in to the gf's workplace. it was german and it said "fest beer" at the bottom, but i don't remember the name. the first taste was of white wine and then a beer taste. this beer was already at a disadvantage because i prefer red wines, but the two flavor stages just didn't mix. i complained and the manager comp-ed me the beer (bf privileges).

the second we picked up at whole foods. it's a hitachino espresso stout. i love their red ale which i drink at the gf's restaurant all the time... and maybe it's unfair because i'm probably putting this up against the pipeline porter which is just all awesomeness... there's too much espresso, if there's such a thing, in this beer. i start my day off with one to two espresso shots, so i'm not sure how this can be. the "coffee" part of this beer just doesn't taste right.

... so there's two beers that i do not recommend. i'll try to get the name on the first one.

Last night one of my coworkers described Corona as "expensive." I looked at him and went "....the **** you say?" After that I decided to keep my mouth shut and not get into beer snob mode beyond say that I'd rather take 1 quality beer than 5 cheap ones.

Anyone know when Kona Brewing will release the "winter seasonal" kona coffee version of the beer?
