Yeah I bought that issue as well! See I am reading my situation the exact same way you are all about the bling bling in the long run. I would actually save more in the long run... and way more reliablity! Getting my own place is going to take time too... and actually this January I will be making pretty good cash. I will be able to afford both while also putting away money to invest... Its all in the matter of I have held off too long on the STI and they might be selling it this Saturday... although I just went on holidays for the long weekend... So I guess I will see when i get back on Monday and then go see them tuesday!
Thanks for the post "insaneSTi" You truely understand my needs ;-)

The 2.5 RS you have has potential to rip the STI another tailpipe. It's much lighter to begin with. Yes the STI has all the specs, but you retain the cool factor over us with the 2 door GC8 style. I had a similar decision about 2 months ago and finally went with selling my 99 modified RS. It was either keep the RS and finish the conversion to turbo or get the damn 5 year loan and have the power, handling immediately. There were few things I enjoyed more than getting dirty and learning what every nut and bolt was for on my old RS. Tough decision man.

Hey Scooby3, I've gone through this over and over again myself. It's a tough decision. I also live at home, but I pretty much have my own apartment and it's not a big deal. I plan on buying a townhouse mid next year, and even if I sold my RS and got an STi, I could still afford both, plus have money to live comfortably. I'd love to be totally independent of car payments, but I just see it as a fact of life. If I pay off my RS in a few months and take care of all my bills, I will put more money into turboing my RS or doing a motor swap. Furthermore, if I move out of state, I don't want to deal with not having someone I can trust to work on a modified car. Like I said before...it's a hard choice and completely up to you.

Scooby3, save up some more money and get the sti. wait until jan. and see how your job turns out. to the others. what's the big deal living at home? i love living at home. i'm 24 and i lived on my own before but nothing beats free rent and free food. i just bought a house couple monthes ago and i'm renting out all the units. the rent is enough to cover the morgage and my car payment. the only down fall is i just took out a loan to pay for the damn property tax.

Will the dealership actually keep my car there until january? Thats just it come January I will know where my finances are at, and I know I will be able to afford it. Its just I can't as of right now. Oh and I just found out I have like a $14,500 lean on my 2.5RS. Even if I did sell my car for 19,000 that would only leave me with 4,500! and I need at least $10,000 left over and then I could put down another 3,000 myself.

I'm 34 now and make 6 figures US$ a year and I am having a hard time justifying selling my modded 02. When I was younger I changed cars alot and always had to have the coolest car I could get. I now see that I should have driven my 88 Wrangler until it dropped and saved my money. Do what you want, but a year from now they'll have the next big thing like a special STi 22b, then they'll bring the s202, then.................it never ends. Enjoy what you have untill you finish colleged and do little mods to it. Find a rich chick to marry then buy what you want. Just kidding on the last one. Well sort of.

invest
The thing that really sucks about cars, any car including the STi is that they depreciate.
Take that money, put it in a good mutual fund, and concentrate on making some good moves in the real world. Come back in 3-5 years and you should have saved a pretty decent chunk of money for a down payment. And you may even find that you've grown out of your STi phase.
STi's are awesome but nothing is better than money and the more you have the more you can make.
Money makes you strong p***y makes you weak.

I got a new proposition.... When I found out I could not get the STI the dealership called me up a few days later saying they have found a buyer. The guy is willing to pay $24,000CDN. However, after I thought I gave up my STI position to buy it I went and bought some 17" SuperLeggra's!!! Now the guy wants to buy my car and I can throw in the rims for a total of $26,000CDN!... and I have a lean on my car for around $14,500CDN. That leaves me with $11,500CDN + some cash in my bank to put down on the car about $13,500CDN total. Any ideas what to do now? Once I thought I had it all figured out this is thrown in the whole mess... Let me know guys what you think! That would be greatly appreciated!
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, Scooby3.(living at home, want something I'm not sure I can afford) I just started working and I'm driving my 15 year old Volvo and for obvious reasons, I want something new. My first choice is an STi, but I'm having a hard time justifying spending that much. I'm probably going to get something cheap and reliable this week and wait at least a year before I get something I really want. It's a hard decisions, I agree. But the thought of being stuck with a huge car payment for 5 years is also not so appealing. Living at home is nice and free, but I need to get my own space and I can tell my dad is ready for the same. If you're comfortable with the size of your monthly payments for 5 years, go for it. But money you save now will get you to retirement a lot faster. As for me, the thought of working for another 30-40 years is depressing. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Then again... old, bald guys in Porsches are goofy. Maybe you should get a nice car now...
