Hard Decision on STI
Can anyone give me some insight here.... I currently drive a 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. I put a down payment for a STI back in October of 02. Now for me to afford the STI I need to sell my RS and the dealership is willing to give me $19,000 Canadian with my tax credit towards the STI. This decision is absolutely killing me, i am loosing sleep over it. If I put $13,000 down my monthly payments will be 768.06 (CDN) a month with corrosion protection and all those kinda goodies... more like $790 (CDN).
Can anyone give me some insight what to do??? This decision is killing me here
Think its possible they can swing a deal for me... I just brought my sister in and she bought a brand new forester off of them... and they know i bring in a lot of business for them as well... anyway please give me some insight that would be awsome!!!

Only you can make this decision..
I'm not sure what your asking us for. If your asking should you get the car.. The answer is YES if you can afford it. I have seen alot of my friends hang them selves out on a limb just to have a car (I know it is an great car but lets be real it is still JUST a car). I am lucky I can afford it and still have a nice house and my wife has a nice car. So if this will not have you living lon the street for the next 5 years then go for it.

Well, I am 22 years old, I still live at home with my mother and her boyfriend (Better than it sounds). I make enough money to afford this car, $2000 a month... soon I will make more (hopefully). Job still not secure though, come January Hope I will be. Plus I will have to pay about $200 a month in unsurance, I pay rent/student loan... so I know i can make the payments. Plus I am investing money for the future as well.... I just need some true insight.
I can just see me putting an incredible amount of money into my RS when everything is basically already there with the STI. In the long run I think I would save money with the STI.
Will I be making a bad decision. I already pay $530 a month on my RS with a couple of more years and $180 on insurance. I have such a passion for this car, I think I might be blinded...

Depends on your reasons for wanting the STI also.... sounds to me like you're trying to talk yourself into the STI.
Stick with the RS if that car suits your needs , finances and lifestyle.

Well the STI is absolutely everything I could imagine in my perfect car! I love absoluely everything about it. Still in the long run, if I were to do an engine swap, change basically everything i wanted... It would run way more expensive than the STI. Thats my big focus here. As well I need to be more mechanically inclined to do that sort of thing. So that there is the reasoning on wanting the STI. Nevermind the looks and respect. Also, you do any body mod on the RS and looks like i am "riceing it up" if you know what im sayin. That is another big thing I would like to stay away from...
Don't get me wrong I love my 01 RS, absolutely love it! I had future plans to drive down to Arizona and turbo charge it (Possibly Twin Turbo, just cause you never see guys doing that). I live for the power. But the STI come on! That is absoluetly the finest peice of machinery I have ever seen in front of my eyes. And once again I see saving money in the long run.
So of course I am talking myself into the STI who hasn't? ;-)
Err very hard decision.... But you guys are helping make my decision today thats for sure. You do have me leaning towards my RS.... I just need the nail in the coffin to make me stay with my RS.
Thanks a lot guys... Keep on helpin if you can!

save up for a while and wait till you make more money. Spending close to half what you make on monthly payments, excluding gas, maintenance and insurance puts you way over half what you make! Not a very wise move for something that depreciates so fast.

Look at it this way, you can have a blast w/ a 2.5 RS project car. Shop smart and take it slow. It shouldn't be that hard to afford if you put your mind and heart into it. Also think about all the $$$ you have put in your RS aready.

Yes, Thank you!
Wow, I think there is the nail in the coffin right there! Think I just might twin turbo my car next year and the insurance company won't even know it ;-)
Plus the STI will be back a few years from now right?
Thanks a lot for your help guys!!!
Is the RS able to produce the same #'s as the STI?

Best of luck (but if you keep thinking things through carefully you won't need much luck),

Scooby3 first you need to decide if it's all that important to you to have your own place. If living at home is not that bad like you said then what's the problem when you start making more money or get married then get your own place. To duplicate what the STi has stock you would spend way more cash than just buying the STi not to mention the fact that there are things you could never duplicate like the frame, STi has 2 sided galvanized steel body panels, handbuilt. Also think about all the project cars gone bad ie. reliabilty/tuning issues and that fact that i've seen plenty of cars w/ plenty of cash thrown at them and they still aren't that fast. Sport Compact showed this perfectly a couple of issues ago w/ their Spank the STi challenge. Where tuner companies put their WRX's against the STi and only one could beat the STi Visnu's car and it cost more than the STi to build. SP's car had $50,000 total spent on it and it was slower in the 1/4 by 3/4 of a second and it lost on the road course and looked hideous next to the STi. Remember the brakes and wheel/tire combo on the STi would cost about $7000 US. Nothing can rival what you get for your money with the STi and it's warrantied while achieving supercar like performance.
