Uppipe Decision

I,m looking towards getting an up for my 03, tough decision which one to get sti catless, aps, vishnu, Looking for the most reliable & best performance gains. Thinking mainly towards the sti for fitment heatshields etc. Have'nt seen many comments about the sti uppipe?

The STi is a good pipe because it should have no fitment issues and looks like a stock piece. Most uppipes should do though, the helix flex is a pretty good pipe as well. Only downside I see with the STi pipe is that it's more expensive.

i have one from gruppe-s and it was pretty cheap, just remember to replace the gaskets cuz and up-pipe leak is a PITA....

I heard that the Turbo-xs one is really good because it matches exactly w/ the inlet of the turbo...

Is the STi uppipe a wrx pipe that is gutted or is the pipe diameter actually larger?

My vote is for gutted stock uppipe, or STi takeoff if you have some extra cash.

Reused the gaskets on mine and 20,000 miles without a leak (of course I-speed.us installed it, not me ).

If you absolutely HAVE to get an aftermarket...let me save you the headache. Definitely:
  • get a flex section
  • DON'T reinstall the stock EGT probe
  • plug the hole with a bolt (M12X1.25)
  • do the resistor mod

I believe that bolt size is incorrect. I don't believe they make a 1.25 pitch in 12mm. All of the 12mm bolts I've seen are 1.75 pitch.

M12x1.75

Also, the bolt should be approximately 30mm in length (25 or 35 should work also).

They make a 1.25 in 12mm, I have seen it before. It is uncommon though.

I got my bolt at Rocky's Ace hardware. Home depot didn't have it. I got my resistor for the cel at radio shack.

I apologize then. I went through my bolt catalog here at work and was unable to find anything with that pitch. I know for certain Lowe's doesn't have it. I guess I'll try my local Ace Hardware.

i got a Helix up pipe and havent had any problems w/ it. it has a flex section which makes it a little easier to install and helps w/ any leaks that might occur.

Yah you BETTER apologize! J/k

It's M12x1.25...hard to find, but kragen usually has them on their "unorganized spinning rack of random fasteners". And 30mm is WAAAAY too long. Look for 20 or smaller. I had to dremel a 30 down to ensure it didn't bottom out.

I guess that may depend on your bung size (that just sounds wrong! ).

If a bolt is replacing the probe and will never be removed, might be a good idea to have it tack-welded in place - no more worries about it backing out. Of course, this is easiest when the uppipe is out of the car.

I'm not sure that red loctite can withstand the temperatures experienced at that point in the exhaust, so I can't recommend its use.

LOCTITE 271 High Strength Threadlocker Adobe Acrobat document, explaining the product, its use, and removal characteristics.
