17-18 yr olds in an Sti? Why?
im 17, and im saving for a STi.
i am not about to read this entire thread, but here is my 2 cents.
i have driven a 6000 pound suburban with a 350 motor. ive driven a 2002 Ford Excursion with a TURBO DIESEL motor. ive driven many other numerous sedans. im currently driving a Nissan Frontier.
my dad has a WRX, and he said if i can drive it safely, then he will cosign with me on the STi once i have a down payment of 10g.
i believe that if you can drive cars with lots of power and cars with little power and do them both safely, then why not get a car with lots of power? dont flame the younger people (teens) because they have more accidents. the studies out there about how teens account for more deaths than anyone other age is simply because there are more of us. not to mention the fact that the kids in high performance vehicles that do get involved in crashes are either:
1) not their fault. they were hit by someone else.
2) not properly trained on how to drive a car with power safely.

But Im with you though i've driven many cars with many different power curves and drivetrains. Experience is what gets you acclimated, if you have to drive a mustang like a grandma for the first week you have it so be it, but you gotta take it easy.

I am 18 and going on 19 years old. And I do admit an STi is a nice car. But I am going to be paying for my STi 100% on my own. I have a plan worked out so I am not taking the plunge into the purchase that I cant handle and also I do not have to sacrifice myself in college.

throwin in my .02 cause I want 2
I know this is one helluva long thread, but I gotta throw in a few comments about earlier posts, so here it goes!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote:
"Being "able to handle" a high performance car is nice, but that has very little to do with the cause of most accidents in my opinion.
I will put myself on the line here and say that categorically the wisdom that comes with age and the responsibility of being a husband and father breeds better judgement while behind the wheel.
We old crotchety 35 years olds simply do less stupid things on public roads because we have different priorities and have learned that we are not immortal. It took my marriage, two kids, deaths of friends (one a speed related death) and my body slowing down before I got the hint that life is fragile.
I don't mean to get sappy here, but speed kills. Sometimes it's because a young driver can't handle the car. But more often, it's because the young driver has created a situation where any amount of driving skills won't save them. I know I'll get flamed for this, but it's poor judgement due to immaturity.
Have fun carefully. Live and learn."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This was extremly well said, probably one of the better comments posted on/about this thread. I have realized myself since becoming a husband and father that I am less likely to take "stupid" risks

"Hey, I didn't say that anybody would turn them down or not. I just think that people have their priorities misplaced if they do spend ~$35000 for their 17-18 yr old's new car. $35000 can pay for a decent college education in Cali. After then, get a job and go crazy. You gotta cook the food before you eat it.. At least thats what my parents used to say"
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree that parent's who spend this kinda money on their kids first car do have their priorities misplaced, But also you should realize that people who spend this kinda money aren't too worried about paying for college, after all, if they can drop this kinda money on their kids car, they can afford to pay for the kid's schooling. Also in some case's realize that Some parents didn't have it so good growing up and since they now can, they will give their children everything they ask for, to make up for them not being able to have everything they wanted as a kid, Stupid? Yes but in some case's all too true!

--------------------------------------------------------------------
I think very few people here are as you so eloquently put it
"Jelles" of some kid who's parent's bought them a hot car at
17-18, the entire point of this thread had nothing to do with being "Jelles" cause some kid has a better car then we do. The point is Most (read:Not All) 17-18yr olds Aren't Responsable Enough To Drive A Car Like A STI (or even WRX).

Yeah I have to say that I am 19 and have been paying for a WRX on my own for a little over a year. And am really wanting to trade in my WRX for an STI, just dont know if its going to be possible (finacially, etc...). But I think after driving this car I would have no problem moving up to an STI.
Just my thoughts, thanks.
Just my thoughts, thanks.
its a shame..
to see kids being spoiled so severely
jealous? not likely.. I worked hard to get where I'm at today financially and as a result I'm a very *proud* owner of a great car. When I get my sti I'll take even more pride in my accomplishments.
wheres the pride in a 30 thousand dollar sports car that was handed to you.. thanks dad!
whats truly appalling is the filthy, beat up, crunched up car that was never properly taken care of because the owner doesn't appreciate it because the owner - doesnt - deserve - it
parents: I don't care if you make 50,000 a year or if you make 5,000,000 a year. dont spoil your damn kids! whats going to motivate them to be better students, to sharpen their skills and go make money so they can buy nice things? teach your kids the value of hard work, dont show them a world where taking the trash out and mowing the lawn for 4 weeks gets you a ferarri and then let them out into the *real* world.
spoiled kids: no we're not jealous, in fact I feel sorry for you.. I hate to imagine where I'd be today if my parents handed me everything I ever wanted.. and I don't care how many driving schools you've attended, walk before you run - at 18 bottom line is you don't have the experience for me to feel safe on the same freeway with you and your 300 horses!
my final thoughts: "kids" (anyone under 21 or with less than 5 years driving experience) shouldn't be allowed on the freeway with anything faster than a VW bus or anything worth more than $5000 - since statistically I'm the one paying for it when you crash it.
call me a jerk, but this is a subject that really pisses me off.. after all if it wasn't for all the spoiled kids and their hot cars I wouldn't be shelling out $300 a month for insurance.

JERK!
I dont really agree with that but after all it is your opinion. I for one think I can drive better than many of people with much more experance and who are twice as old.

just for you gordy:
I'm 19, my parents are paying my way through college. They bought me a first allotment 02' wrx wagon for my graduation present, and now they're getting me an STi.
Spoiled? you bet your *** i am, but just because i'm spoiled doesn't mean i don't know anything about value. Am i sitting on my *** right now living off my parents and doing nothing? No, i'm working my *** off in school so that i can repay all the kindness that they have shown me as i was growing up. For the chinese, especially in my family, it is understood that we can spoil the kids, but as long as they understand that when they get older, the responsibility of supporting the family is entirely theirs. I don't mean the family that i will have someday, but my parents also. I am expected to pay off the loans on the car myself, and whatever else my parents are paying in order for me to have a comfortable and "spoiled" life. Appreciate it now or appreciate it later, i intend to appreciate it now when i'm young and stupid than to do it later when i am 65 in an auto c5 crusing below the speed limit.
I hope that irritated you more, there's nothing else i'd rather see than someone that generalizes with such extreme prejudice as you.
If you'll excuse me, i think i'll go back to typing out my homework on my $600 pda that my parents bought for me and sending this message out on my gsm phone that my parents are paying for.

that has to be one of the most ignorant, gross generalizations i've read on this board.
There are plenty of "under 21" drivers who have the driving skills AND the maturity to give the STI the respect it deserves. By your ridiculous criteria, Formula one drivers like Jenson Button, etc would have to wait till till last year so that they are "old enough" to handle 300bhp. LOL.
If you have a problem paying the $300 for insurance, I suggest you wait till you're older and making more money. LOL.
BTW i'm 32!

I am sorry, but GORDY, what are you talking about. I am 22, and I admit have had 3 wrecks. All of them were other peoples' fault. As for your age, I am sure you NEVER drove when you were 16 years old. I am SURE you WAITED until you were at least 25 and "mature" enough to begin driving. The last point about you paying for my insurance, I will remember that when the government is taking 30% of my paycheck for YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY. I hope you remember that it will be the younger generations that pay both your medical bills and paycheck at some point in your life. I think a little bit of restraint might be in order.
Seraph, I think your missing the point. You use spoiled and comfortable together as if they're synonymous. I see you take pride in being able to spend your parents money.. perhaps with your radically different value system my prejudice generalizations don't apply, but just the fact that you feel you are 'busting your ***' in school to deserve these things re-emphasizes my point..
97itr153..
[There are plenty of "under 21" drivers who have the driving skills AND the maturity to give the STI the respect it deserves]
of course there are "plenty", I think "plenty" makes up about 0.0001% of who I'm talking about but hey prejudice generalizations are for everyone! these are exactly the people that don't belong on the freeway! There's a huge difference between skilled and experienced. Over skilled and under-experienced is a formula for disaster in just about anything not just driving. Also, where did Jenson Button learn how to race - on the freeway?! I dont think so, I didn't say anything about needing 5 years to goto the race track.. I'm talking about the FREEWAY, where people are DYING and our beautiful cars are being TOTALLED ....sigh
woogie:
yea I was 16 once, why do you think Im ranting? I was 16 once, and I think I can recall not knowing a whole lot about driving!
I said that under 21 shouldn't be allowed on the freeway with anything worth more than a VW bus not restricted entirely.. you gotta learn somehow - but christ, dont learn how to drive in $30k .. look at it from an economical standpoint, add up how much money teenagers "crash", think of all the money thats WASTED building and repairing cars for underaged underexperienced drivers! for what? that money comes from somewhere, we pay for it when we buy our cars, when we pay our taxes, and yea in our insurance bill too

I agree that all these ****ing kids who get cars gave to them are a bunch of *****s. I am 19, paying for my wrx(since day one), college, insurance, and all other bills. Yeah it can be tough, but I get by. I can see kids getting a car, but not a 30k+ sports car handed to them, thats redicoulous. I also agree that those kids wont have a damn clue how to drive it properly. If they bought it themselves they would be much more cautious and approach and elearn their limits much more slowly, if they wreck they would hate to pay the high insurance premiums and rediculous repair cost. So i too think kids that get cars handed to them are not as aware of how lucky they are. Well see them later on in the real world i suppose, time will tell!
