Unhappy 17-18 yr olds in an Sti? Why?

Why are 17-18 yr olds thinking about getting an Sti? For the most part, kids of this age are too immature to drive this type of high-performnce machine. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but take a kid that only has driven a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic in Drivers Ed and put him directly into a car that has 190 more horsies and this can spell disaster. Whaddaya guys think?

This reminds me of former Japanese land owners who sell their land, get a honkin' amount of cash and use that to buy their kids RX-7s, 300ZXs, Skylines, Silvias, etc. They then mod them, race them on hills (a la Initial D), crash them, and then have their parents buy another one. Booooooo.

My first one was the good old Japanese SDF-1. The '81 Datsun Maxima station wagon. Lemon when we bought it. Lemon still. Has a watered down Z engine and that is the best thing I can say for it. The second car I got to drive was an '85 Prelude. Good college car.. Autocrossed this one too. Next was the drive in my dads '71 240z. Bargain sports car of its day that literally redefined affordable sports car. Current one is the 2.5 RS I have now. Next one? The Sti hopefully.

My 0.02 for all it's worth,
Tim

Samurai- its nice to hear how you have paid your dues and will one day have an STi and I don't doubt that you deserve it, but even if a 17 year old gets an STi thats no justification for us to give him a hard time. If any of us had the chance to get an STi at 17 we would jump on it in a heartbeat. Its the parents who buy the cars that are to blame. I by the way am #1 on the list at a local dealer to get an STi. Just to let you know I have taken performance driving courses before and am planning on going to Skip Barber's this may before I get my STI so you won't see me acting stupid and wrecking my STI. Even some of us youngsters know that racing belongs at the track.
I feel the same way, too. Good to see that some of the younger crowd will be responsible if they end up with the STi or any other high-powered car. Thumbs up to that.

My first car? Hehe... It was a POS '89 Plymouth Sundance. LOL Paid about $3k for it. Then it became my sister's POS beater car. Hopefully now it's nicely compacted in a junkyard someplace. :P

While I do admit to getting jealous when someone younger has a nice car that I wish I could have had at that age, I don't think they're necessarily unfit to drive it. There are numerous young people racing that could kick my butt no matter what age they are. It's not like you want to start learning how to drive fast when you're 20 LOL! You'd lose out on the natural learning ability of the young.

Start training young for most any specialized activity. I'm sure everyone has a young relative that just automagically has picked up the ability to use a computer or play video games, etc.

some are just born with a silver spoon in their mouths. unlike the rest of us. i didn't even have a spoon. i guess in the long run, it built me into a stronger person. i am actually happy i can pay for a car and call it my own, instead of "oh, my dad pays for it". having a $35,000 something car and only 17 or 18 is just crazy. that's why so many kids are either injured or killed in a car accident because of wanting to "race" somebody on the highway or something for bragging rights or just to prove something. it takes a mature person to get behind the wheel of a car, especially one with 300hp.

I would agree for the most part, but I happened to get into go karting at a young age and by the time I was ready to drive I had been driving karts and cars at our cabin for many years and my first car tho not an STi equal was a pretty fast Nissan 200SX turbo, which wasnt bad at the time. I think its all based on the person. Most 16-19s arent mature enough, but its a pretty broad statement to jump on all of em. Who knows. To each his/her own I guess.

Of course what person that age can AFFORD one, thats another topic all together. If they have a job good enough heck Im in the wrong business, if they have rich parents, well they are lucky...

Its the same with motorcycles. I bought my 954RR last year and 3 "kids" also bought em. 2 were totalled (along with the drivers) the first ride we all went on. Its all about maturity once again, we rode with 16 year olds who rode the hell outta their bikes and we rode with 40 year old who shouldnt have been on bikes in the first place. All about the individual.

OTOH, I see lots of supposed "mature" drivers in vehicles with far less than 300hp... and they drive like $hit.

Damn, you guys who are getting parents to buy an Sti are sooo lucky. My parents told me that I'm gonna have to get a new car on my own (which was after college). I was driving old underpowered cars for the better part of 4-5 years after I got my license.

Again, I do say in my message that there are exceptions to the rule. Some people race and want the Sti, some kids are millionaires by the age of 19 and want the Sti.. Who knows.. But, the point is, it is much better to start small and work your way up to the ultimate.. with my salary, its the Sti.

WRXStile, I'm not hating on anybody. I'm not gonna go to peoples houses and tell overly generous parents not to buy an Sti for their kids. But, I think parents who buy 35000$ cars for their teen kids either both have 6 figure salaries and spoiling their kids rotten, or are getting their priorities misplaced. What happened to college and getting a better education for God's sake! I like the Sti and all, but if I had a choice between the Sti and a chance to go to Stanford to get a quality education, I'd pick Stanford in a heartbeat. I'll get the Sti later when I make the big bucks coming out.

Tim
