17-18 yr olds in an Sti? Why?
i couldn't agree with you more samurai. i guess priorities are out the window now days. also WRXSTile- how can you be a sh&^ty experienced driver or a good inexperienced one. so you mean to say that without experience one could drive a 500 hp car around a track flawless? don't think so. or better yet, a person that's been driving for years and years on tracks and what not wouldn't be able to drive on a track? hmmmmm, interesting. well anyway, i'm not here to blast you with constructive comments. just trying to clarify. also, you said, "buying your own car is something to be proud of, but having one given to you is nothing to be ashamed of". well, first of all, what is a car? will it get you anywhere in life? just wondering. now, what is education? hell, $35k i WOULD be ashamed if i didn't put it to better use than a car. also an "ecno box" hmmm, no, rather an "education". much more useful, in my opinion, but i guess that's just my opinion, right?

So what I mean is there are people who have been driving for 20 yrs and their cars have been hit more than a toilet seat by their own fault, and their are persons who have been driving for say 1 year who haven't had a single accident, and are good drivers.

And where did this education thing come from. I never said anything about giving up your education for a car. Did I miss the post that said what you rather have a college education or an STI. and if it was posted i never said take the STI screw college (even though I'm close to 6 figures w/o it)
I also never said that one particular car would make all your dreams come true. But this is a forum based on a Car.
And like I said before if the parents said here calmdip take the keys to your new 35k$ car I seriously doubt you would turn them down. I'm real sure you would be guilt stricken as you drove off.

Forget the STi. Punks are wrapping regular WRXs around trees at prodigious rates. Can't wait to see what happens when a few of them get their hands on STis.
In the 80s it was Mustang V8s. In the 90s it was 300ZX TTs and RX7s and the like. In the 00s it's the turbo Imprezas. Cheap + fast = whippersnappers buying them = whippersnappers crashing them = higher insurance rates for all cheap fast cars.

Well of course statistically speaking, young punks are more prone to wrap anything around a tree compared to the general population. However, the combination of cheap and fast is more inclined to draw young punks to that particular make/model by virtue of their speed and affordability (whereas more expensive and fast tends to draw the older lead-foots). Young punkery and quick cars are a volatile mix.
I checked with my insurance company a while ago and learned it would cost me less to insure a Corvette, an Audi S8 or a BMW M5. Why? Cuz it's primarily old coots who can afford these cars. (Even if young punks can afford older used Vettes, I guess they're not buying them in any significant numbers.) And I suppose old coots don't have as much lustre for ramming immovable objects and/or other cars, even if they're driving powerful machines.
Actuarial statistics is an interesting game.

Some of the "older" (I would say more mature but that obviously doesn't apply) people here need to realize that some younger people are able to handle cars with a little bit of power. Although it's true that there are very immature 17-18 year old drivers out there, there are also a good amount of drivers just as stupid that aren't as young.
My first car was a "hand me down SUV", my second being a twin-turbo Supra, my third, a Honda S2000, and my fourth is going the be the WRX STI. I've never been in any at fault accidents and I have several friends with similar cars that are my peers. The WRX is an AWD car that is much safer to drive than one with RWD. I'm selling my car and getting the STI for practicality reasons as having a two seater isn't resourceful.

Uh, well, nobody accused you specifically. If the shoe fits, wear it. Otherwise, no need to get defensive over accusations that weren't leveled at you. And while your anecdotal stories are a relief to hear, the aggregate statistics paint a pretty clear picture of who's racking their cars and who isn't.

WRXStile- how do you know if you know more than the people at work? just for example. just because you have to help them out a little doesn't mean that you basically know more than them, in terms of experience. i bet they know more than you think they know. don't take things for granted. and by the way, driving is a bit different. you have other factors, variables should i say on the road then in the office, so that is a bad example. anything can happen to you on the road. what i'm directing at is the fact that irresponsible people can injure themselves as well as others around them in a car. that's the whole point. some of you are taking things too personally. if you think that you are a responsible driver then power to you, but i'm pointing out those that aren't as good as some of us. it's not a perfect world. now, getting back to the age. 17 or 18 is young for someone that just started their life. well, education, hmmm don't most people start college around that age. well, then, let's see, using that 35,000k that your parents or relatives or whoever is going to give you and use it for education. where is a nice car going to get you in life, hmmm i wonder? that's where the education came in, and i'm pretty sure you have one, so i'm sure you know what i mean.

The work was an example of experience, not of how driving was just like working. It was meant to show how people can have experience doing things but not be good at it.
17 or 18 is young for someone that started their life but that doesnt mean they cant have a nice car. Like you said "anything can happen to you on the road" what is to say that a 17 -18 yr old is more or less irresponsible. Sure numbers show younger people having more accidents but that will ahppen weather they are driving a STI or a Accent.
And as far as the education goes ONCE AGAIN no one said give up college for a car. If you have children and you choose to send them to college instead of buying them a car then good for you, of course you could be wasting your money (ever look at attrition rates for college, people waste jusat as much money on education as they do on cars). But if i can afford to do both then why shouldn't I.
And AGAIN I never said any car would make all your dreams come true.
