Sure SRH440
FOSTEX T50RP
My list of cans. Nothing super high end or expensive. They get driven off a small tube amp I built.
The Sure SRH440 will be found in every recording studio. It is a solid can that is comfortable, affordable and considered an industry standard.

and This. I have some older HD 6xx (don't even remember the model, but equivalent to 600/650) and I have been extremely happy with them. IMO, unless you are recording, I don't see the need for $500+ phones. On my audio forum the most recommended are a few different Sonys for inexpensive over the ear, Grados, Shure, etc...
Beat By Dre: The Exclusive Inside Story of How Monster Lost the World
They aren't even Monster anymore. It is a long article but a great read about the crap that Beat's have become. I lose respect to anyone who wears these in any kind of media because I know they are getting paid to market crap. So sad.

Me thinks you have missed the point of reference headphones but that's ok. Its not the fact they cost 1600 bucks that makes them good. Its the fact they used balanced electromechanical systems with high end ferofluids and typically wood backing to make them sound as true to dead on perfect as can be had.
You are trying to compare a vw bug (the beats crap) to a Zonda(high end reference)

I know how headphones are made. Thanks for the lesson though. I'm actually a fan of the system that Gagan's company is using and I really hope they can figure out a smaller system for the lower price range.
Thank you for your input.
These are for my son. He's 16, and is into quality, not hype. He listens to anything from jazz to Atmosphere, classical to some dubstep..lol. He has nice set of headphones for his gaming and a set of Skullcandy ones that he takes out and about. These headphones would primarily be for lounging around the house and for when he's kicking back in his room doing homework, etc.
Thank you for your input as well. I'll be taking my son out today to check out a few.

Try before you buy.
I personally really like the HD600 or the replacement HD650.
I also really like the Beyer Dynamic 770 I think it is.
After we (Oppo) do these high end ones we are designing we are likely going to make something cheaper to compete against the beats market. At least that's what we would like to do.

If you think the brz is bought because of hype and not a good car 1) you dunno **** about cars 2) you dunno **** about driving.
Clearly it isn't all about hype if even subie people are ignorant turds about it.

Five Best Headphones The Sonys in that list are the ones recommended on my audio forum, the MDR-7506.
The Audio Techincas listed in their (Lifehacker) top cans are on sale for a pretty big discount right now:

While they are good enough out of the box, they sound better if you use a + a about $40 for both. Well worth it, especially if you want clean sounds + eq control.
With the combo above, mp3's will cap the performance, and you will need m4a's or flac files to take advantage of the performance gains.
