That's probably true.

I don't think it has anything to do with the headphones. Apple could make their own and they'd probably be better looking and definitely would sound better.

I think it's more to do with the streaming side of beats. I think apple is going to try and shift around some of their ideology with music streaming and try to tap in to that market even more. Try to shut down spotify.

Seems like a really strange buy.

Totally unlike Apple in the past. Apple never buys consumer hardware companies.

I guess I see the streaming point, but Beats Music just launched and will have to fight hard to topple Rdio, Google Play Music, and Spotify.

I doubt they will touch the hardware business, but $3 billion is a crazy amount of money to buy a very new streaming service.

Honestly it makes zero sense to me because this isn't something Apple has ever done before.

Then again it sorta makes sense because both Apple and Beats charge their customers way too much for what they're actually getting.

That's exactly why they are doing it - because they haven't done it before and their business as it is can't be sustained much longer unless they do something new. They have all that money right now, but they've been there before and almost died out at one point back in the 90s too. They need something that sort of compliments their products, but has a market beyond JUST their products, which Beats does. Whether or not they suck, they sell, just like Bose and Monster - on name alone.

When a business gets that big, they have little choice but to keep trying to squeeze out more profit to keep investors happy and at this point they have to do something as their products don't command the "must have" status that they did for so long. So they have to branch out from their comfort zone. At that size of company, they no longer give a rat's a$$ about the consumer - they just want to keep investors happy with high stock prices.

Apple - Press Info - Apple to Acquire Beats Music & Beats Electronics

key quote:

“Music is such an important part of Apple’s DNA and always will be,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The addition of Beats will make our music lineup even better, from free streaming with iTunes Radio to a world-class subscription service in Beats, and of course buying music from the iTunes Store as customers have loved to do for years.”

Since this did turn into the audiophile thread, anyone have any input on how Yamaha's headphone lineup stack up against the competition?

http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/headphones/

I'm no audiophile, but I would like to try entry-level (by entry level, I mean triple digit cost, not looking for anything past four digits) headphones.

What's your actual budget?

I'd stick to Seins or Beyerdynamic to be honest unless you can go like $700-800 then there are some other options, but not many that can be easily powered.

You need mobile device use? Open or closed?

I want to spend no more than $500. No mobile device use, I want a wired headset. I prefer a closed ear headset.

And something I stumbled across in relation to original topic:

Crank for 32ohm?!

I don't have anything that cheap. But we will for portables in maybe half a year.

PM-2 is $700

PM-2 is just over that, but open.

I'd look at maybe the Beyerdynamic DT770

We are looking at a set of portables that are closed ourselves, not sure about price though since it's basically table topic stage right now.

Only thing that the comic missed is the epic smile on Dre's face. That dude just got rich off hype. Nothing but hype and marketing.
