Report: Apple Is Getting Ready to Buy Beats for $3.2 Billion

According to the Financial Times, Apple is closing in on an acquisition of Beats, the headphone manufacturer turned streaming music service. The $3.2 billion deal would give Apple control over a powerful brand, but at the same time, it would be puzzling and uncharacteristic of Apple. The FT points out it would be Apple's biggest acquisition ever.

Holy crap really... that's incredibly stupid.

They're just going to put "beats" technology in to their stuff like PC companies have been doing for years.

If they had any creativity they'd buy another company with a better reputation. Beats has been GARBAGE since they split with Monster. The cables used to be the only good thing about their stuff.

The box is pretty solid. The high end stuff is decent. But it's all overpriced for what it is and the lower end stuff is straight up KMART special. I gave mine to my 4 year old daughter.

Seriously... wtf is apple thinking.

They used to buy companies that actually made great products but weren't that well known yet. Now they buy well known companies with crap product?

Just another reason to go Samsung.

I only liked the Studios but felt $300 too much for those. I'd rather some Beyerdynamic.

Or our Oppos.

I just saw this too. I don't understand it either. Beats are not worth the price.

And streaming music technology can be had better somewhere else, especially at that price.

And the brand seems to already be fading a bit as reality (that the headphones are just so-so) is starting to overshadow the hype

Maybe Apple should buy Monster Cable while they're at it.

Apple has cache in its name alone, and so does Beats, so why wouldn't it make sense to buy off the brand and continue to bilk rubes who are more concerned about brand name image than actual quality products?

But not at a price of $3.2B.

Apple could instead just make Beats look alikes (just like many otheranufacturers) and slapped their Apple logo on it. And it would sell.

There's gotta be something more to this deal. Like the Beats streaming already has agreements with many of the popular artists.

^Either way, Apple could have gone a different direction with better quality and prices. Bleh.

garbage head/earphones. even the ones that came with HTC phones sucked. I guess apple has the money to waste. 3.2 billion barely effects them. they can make it all back from the new iphone coming out september.

I do think they just want the name, BUT, most likely they will also apply their marketing/design techniques to them and improve them some to create yet another product you don't need that people want, mainly for the brand name. Apple has one serious flaw that owning Beats could (eventually) solve: their earbuds/pods SUCK. At least having Beats in their pocket means they can come up with something a little better.

Apple's rich and practically financially invincible at this point in the game, and the Beats demographic isn't necessarily the same as the Apple demographic, so why wouldn't Apple want to wrangle in the Beats fans as part of their empire? That's what I think.

And depending on if they rebrand or keep Beats as its own brand, I think they will keep its own brand. Now they have Dre, the music services and all of the endorsement deals. I'd bet if Apple went to the athletes that has the endorsement deals with Beats, it would cost Apple more.

They wanted the name and most likely will keep the brand separate. They likely want to increase the brand, not absorb it, because people know the name and that fits right in with their marketing style: trendy. The streaming service is just a big fat bonus on top IF it takes off.

They're buying the company for the huge influence dre and the other cofounder have on the music industry. Mac rumors says apple is revamping iTunes due to declining music sales, so this is probably a huge part of their strategy for more music rights.

I think they also acquired beats because it's a huge selling point in PCs, windows phones and android phones. It might be a play to move to weaken the attractiveness of their competitors, or gain from their competitor's success.

Apple is sitting on 100+ billion $ cash and haven't really done major purchases like facebook and google are doing. Look at how much google bought Nest and facebook bought Whatsapp. Apple needs to spend some cash, and Beats while being OK headphones have great marketing and market share.
