So who sleeps with a firearm close by to protect from intruders?

You have fully automatic weapons? How?
A semi-auto AK, or semi-auto AR are NOT assault rifles, they are semi automatic rifles that are magazine fed.
READ: Full auto AK = assault weapon.

Word, I agree. What a piece of crap gun that is.
One thing I will not tolerate in a firearm is unreliability. If you have the most accurate pistol/rifle in the world, and it doesn't shoot 5% of the time, well, your firearm is pretty much useless.
Save yourself some dough and buy an springfield XD-40.

thanks for the insight on common sense...I got that.
What I don't know is the types of guns available and how I can try a variety of them out without having to go out and buy each one.
I really haven't a clue where to start when it comes to what to get first...I like handguns but have never had the chance to shoot a shotgun yet.
Overall...I'd like to learn more about various types of guns by actually trying them out at a range.

Many ranges have a program where you can pay like $50 and fire like 30 different weapons. The range near me back in Seattle had such a program.

Go to reeds indoor range. Gun rentals are $10. Rent 4 or five... I suggest you try the following:
Try one for each brand:
Glock 17(9mm), 19(9mm), 23(.40), or 21 (21 is 45acp. which is a big round).
Sig P229, P226, P220
Wather P99 in 9mm or .40
Springfield XD-9, or XD-40... there are a few diff models, but try one for sure, They are a great bargain for one of the most reliable/accurate pistols you can buy (Its on par with Glock)
Also, try out a couple 1911's... ask the range master for their selection and try one. They are great.
There's $50 in rentals... Fire 50 rounds out of each of them to see which you like the best.
I chose those particular guns because they are all different in ways. Glocks and glock-type pistols take a little getting used to... but are reliable as hell, and accrurate as well). Sigs fire very smoothly, and feel much nicer then Sigs, but they are not as reliable... and so on, and so on.

(Psssst... I suggest the springfield XD... $450ish with two magazines, and a gun that will never fail you).

While my collection pales in comparison to Dan's, I find it sufficient.
Linky
careful, most places wont rent a single person a firearm.
too many suicides...
dont laugh.
if anyone wants to have a BAIC range day, the indoor range at the san leando gun club is big. like 10-15 stalls.
those with firearms can lets others shoot. they just buy their own ammo and pay the $10 to shoot.

This may sound stupid, but what happens if you bring your own weapon - do you need to show proof of ownership or do they inspect it or something?
Anyone know of a good gun cleaning guide or resource?
Thanks,

I will be sleeping near my firearms really soon. I go pick up my Glock 22 40cal. and Beretta 21a 22cal today. These are my first firearms and I am really excited.
So when are we going to have a firearms/shooting range meet?
We should all meet up at the shooting range on Skyline sometime. Squeeze off some rounds. And then go for a drive up and down Skyline or HWY 9.
