US statistics for the 16 year old driver:

Motor vehicle death rates per 100,000 people peaked at age 16 for drivers and passengers.
Best thing about statistics is that you can make then say whatever you want. So why would the rate peak, well because 16 is the first year you can drive so there is a peak in drivers and you tend to be with other people your age. I bet that rate would peak in whatever year the age limit was.

About two out of every three teenagers killed in crashes were males.

*this proves my immature "wanting to get laid" theory

Male teenage (typically age 16) drivers have higher death rates than their female counterparts-21 per 100,000 people, compared to 10 per 100,000 for females.

*Wow another piece of evidence for ya a$$hole!
So why should us girls have to wait to drive because of some stupid males.

*Hmm... maybe they were showing off on the weekends? i could be wrong though...
Well probably because a lot of kids do not have their own cars and therefore do not drive during the week, they borrow mom or dad’s car for the night. Also could be increased because there are more drunk drivers out on weekends (of any age) that could contribute to the crash, also bad conditions at night can increases chances.

*Never saw that one coming... i must live in a bubble

62% of teenage passenger deaths occurred in crashes in which a sixteen year old was driving. Among people of all ages, 20% of passenger deaths in 1998 occurred when a teenager was driving
Well it makes since that if you are a teenager you have teenager with you thus increasing the chances of teens dying in a crash that a teen drove in. That statistic is only useful in and of itself. When looking at the big picture only 20% was when teenagers were driving, so in other words 80% are do to the older people.

Also none of these take into account if the teenager was at fault or not, just says there was a teen driver involved.

Also this doesn’t take into account that the kids parents didn’t by them a safe car instead the kid could be driving some old POS that no matter who was in would have been killed.

The car for a 16 year old is a luxury item, not a necessity (in MOST cases).

Yeah, there will be a few kids going to work or school, but I am sure they could figure something out.

Not saying that 16 years should not drive, but remember driving is a PRIVLEDGE not a right!

When I was 16 I was the manager for my schools theatre, I had to make runs downtown all the time to big rental companies plus I had to go to lumberjack all the time to pick up items needed. My extra activities required me to be able to drive places. In fact I had to do all that when I was 15 and it sucked because I always had to wait around for someone else to drive me and I was always behind because of it. I also traveled to different places for school stuff and when I was an editor for the school newspaper I drove around a lot.

Also after the car crash I was in I had to drive to physical therapy 3 times a week, my parents both worked so they couldn’t drive me and there was no buss service out that far. I also was in charge of making sure my sister got places.

I full agree with the statement that driving is a privilege not a right. Just because it is a privilege doesn’t mean that 16 yr olds should not drive.

Also you have to think of how it will effect the entire state, there are a lot of rural areas in CA were there is no such thing as a public bus and those kids need to drive 30 + miles to get to a school or to work. My cousins have an hour car ride each day to school, no bus, my uncle cant wait for them to be able to drive.

I didnt exactley read this whole thread but my cents are as followed; I dont think they need to change the driving age from 16. Instead put some more provisions. First that whole thing about you cant drive anyone for the first 6 months should be a whole year and the driving between 12am-5am should be until you turn 18. Second the law should make it easier for kids to lose their licenses. I mean like speeding, tailgating, any accident there at fault for. They should lose it anytime they show negligence for a law and being a decent driver. Obviously parking violations and small things like that probably not but if kids lost their licenses for deciding to go 10 mph over the posted speed limit they will never speed. This would force young drivers under the age of 18 to really pay close attention to what their doing. Also the law about driving people before your year is up and driving after 12am would result in lose of license. Every kid would be afraid of burning out or passing a grandma in the left lane. Being 18 and still in High school i can tell you that impulse is what gets kids in trouble and if you take that away they will be forced to be decent drivers or not drive at all. Like someone said its a priveledge not a right and they should earn the right to have a DL. On a side note another solution is to not allow girls to gets licenses at all and boys cant have a RWD car. (Jk). Hope this makes some sense, i typed it way too fast.-Todd-

Don't be mad at me because you're too damn lazy.

See the response from WRX Goddess -- I agree with a lot of points she makes.

Who says I'm mad at you? I just think it's sad that, instead of thinking for yourself, you mindlessly regurgitate the gibberish that insurance companies (and, I would imagine, other entities of authority) spoon-feed you...

I just read most of this post, and I belive with some, and disagree with some points made.
1. All 16 year olds are not all dumbass' like some of you say they are. THere are quite a few (including a few on this board) who arn't stupid enough to street race, speed, run stoplights, ect. They care about their car's and their lives enough not to do that crap. The problem lies in the fact that there is, how do i put this...um...a higher "dumbass precentage" in the 16-17 year old population than with say 30 year olds. By saying every 16 year old is a dumbass, and irresponsible is just plain stupid.
2. THe real way to curb these accidents is to extend the period that you need your permit for to 1 year, and REQUIRE drivers education for all young drivers. Also, make the test so much harder than it is right now. Currently in colorado you have to make 3 right turns, 3 left turns, and one lane change in a residential area to get your licence...takes all of 12 minnutes. That is really sad.
Cheers
