i think the real thing though is not necessarily the age. given you are not as mature at 16 as you are at 18. thats why i said just move the age up to 18, but i think that it should just be more difficult to get a drivers license. have the drivers test consist of more than just a 5 minute trip around the block. also every 5 years or so you should have to re take a drivers test to show that you are a capable driver.

if i would have gotten my car when i was 16, i would have died when i was 16 2/3 years old, no doubt.
when your young, there is a lack of...knowledge
sure, real world experience is good to have, but actual classroom knowledge doesnt hurt either.
i firmly believe certain ages should only be able to drive certain cars.
16-17 - Saturn
18-40 - whatever the hell you can afford
41-50 -slow *** luxury sedan
51- infiniti - hire a taxi driver

It doesn't really matter much about raising the age as it does making the test muhc harder, and the teaching of driving much more intense. Having the permit time being a year or more before a license.

I think it's good. If I had just learned to drive at 25...I would've been a HELL of a lot more careful than when I *ahem* learned to drive at 15.
Skill comes into it somewhat, but teenagers have no common sense. I sure didn't. Not to mention that at 18 people are more likely to be paying into their cars and being more careful because of it.
(but I think they should keep it at 16...the government has taken too many rights away as it is...)

I just get tired of people blaming the accidents on the teenagers because of their age, and never saying anything that it could possibly be caused from the lack of experience they have, not how old they are

make it as hard as in other countries... i heard its very difficult to get a license in most european countries??? one of my friends passed w/ a 72... 2 points above the minimum.... the first time i rode w/ him, he almost killed us 3 times in about half an hour... he didnt get noticably better at driving for another 2 years or so...
make the daym test a lot harder, make it so there's no room for error on the test... like instead of 30 mistakes, make it 3 and your done...
but in my youth, i vote for a skip barber required class.. hehe.. sure, some would be more confident than ever and be totally wreckless... but the majority of the people that dont belong on the road, wouldn't pass the course:banana:

Bad idea, IMHO. However, I do think they should require a permit for 1 year before a license....and yes, that means I do think they should move DOWN the age for a permit to 15 yrs even.

we could change age to 25, and thoes people would still get into the accidents.
driver education is no substitution for real world experience imho

I don't agree at all with changing the age. I do agree with Impala about making them have their permit for a year.
The real problem lies with the sh*tty drivers period. They're not necessarily 16, I've seen old people do a lot more dangerous things than 16 year olds lately. We should all have to be retested every five years and the tests should be much more involved. Hell, I didn't even have to get on the freeway or parallel park for my D.L. test.
The only way they'd get me to vote for it was if they tied that to lowering the drinking age to 18. Hell, if you can take a bullet for your country, you should be able to drink a beer.

Age is not the issue

So how about a longer learning permit time frame, atleast a year. Regardless of the age issue.
Also - a stiffer punishment issue.
1. If they fail the written or drivers test, they can't retake it for 6 months.
2. If they get a moving violation ticket while under their learning permit, then they will have to wait ANOTHER year before getting their license.
3. If they get a moving violation their first year of having a license, then they have their license revoked back to a learning for 6 months.
These might not be the ideal rules, but with more time behind the wheel with a learning permit and stiffer penalities - you will see more responsible and safer drivers.
