are you seriously complaining about oakland cops? they are the department that get the most respect from me because it hard patroling oakland..AND they are "short" on cops. there are alot more dick departments, like the ones down here in the south bay (traveling in packs of 3-4+), but oakland is definitely not one of them.

OPD would be one of the last to pull you over for going a little over the limit or send you to the ref BECAUSE they have more SERIOUS things to take care of.

+1 for O.P.D.

oh yeah, and its more of a political stunt rather than a shortage of cops, with the whole old mayor going out new mayor coming in thing.

I totally disagree. The only speeding ticket I've ever gotten since I moved here was from OPD (I've received warnings from CHP and BPD here, but they were both just that, warnings). I got lost and exited the freeway somewhere south of downtown right alongside some railroad tracks. So anyhow, I'm driving along when out of nowhere, this cop appears and pulls me over, and tells me that it "sounded" like I was going too fast (wtf?!-turns out he didn't radar me; I wonder why...). So I reply that I wasn't really going as fast as he thought I was, and that the acceleration noise he was mentioning probably had something to do with the car that I was driving at the time, which was a Pontiac Grand Prix (noisy pos rental). So I'm thinking that I would get a warning, but instead he writes me a ticket for going "35-45" in a 25 in the middle of nowhere, on the basis of "acceleration noise." He made me sit there forever while writing up the ticket, called for backup (super wtf, since I was totally polite and non-threatening mind you), and finally let me leave with the ticket for "speeding." After I get my ticket, I proceeded to investigate the surrounding area, taking pictures of the street layout and whatnot, because I totally suspected it was a speed trap location. And lo and behold, after I got pulled over, they stopped a BMW, and after noticing that I was paying attention to what they were doing, gave that guy a warning and let him go. Sure enough, when I went to go fight this ticket at the courthouse, the cop didn't bother to show up, so it automatically got thrown out (I was so looking to confronting this person in court too; being a Boalt student certainly has its upsides). The moral here is, just because some other departments are "worse," that doesn't mean that this department is "innocent" of all the crappy behavior that we associate with cops in general (i.e. setting up illegal speed traps). Go to Oakland traffic court, and when you see how many traffic citations they've given out, and heard what they were actually given out for, then you might just realize that these cops aren't as "angelic" as you think they are.
