100% of our family business is word of mouth... We even have customers that send us Xmas cards and gifts after 10+ years of us customizing their houses because not only do we do a great job, but we respect our customers and treat them like family... That is why we have a thriving business today... If you don't respect us, we won't respect you, simple as that.
I do have to say, when we do stuff for our great return customers, we do give price breaks and such, but only because they have been great customers in the past, and they never once ask for it... We do it out of appreciation of their return business and their word of mouth recommendations... This won't fly for some idiot that calls us out of the blue and demands a 40% discount because some TV repair man says he can custom paint a house for much less then we can. If you don't want quality work, then don't come to professionals that pride themselves in their quality of work, and not the quantity of work.
I help our family business out by enforcing payment from the bastards that wont pay us for whatever reason, I also deal with the ghetto folks that want us to do odd jobs in ghetto places, basically the kind of people you know are only getting an estimate so they can claim the money for their landlord, whatever... So I deal with the scum of this industry.... One thing I can say, I've never had a customer not pay me after I paid them a visit.
You'd be amazed at how nice people become when they come face to face with me versus my nice little old mom who usually takes care of that stuff... People disrespect her and take advantage of her because she's nice... which is f'ed up in its own... Do you go around in the real world and disrespect people and take advantage of them because they respect you, because they are honest to you, and because they are genuinely nice to you? Unless you're a true *** hole with a mental problem, no, you don't do that... So why should you act that way to a business?
Sorry for the rant, that was long coming.

It's a tough nut to crack as I think everyone of the Bay area vendors works their asses off and tries their best for their customers in a market that is rife with sub par parts, low balling and now a crappy economy to make matters even worse.
Let's be honest none of us are making enough money to be able to buy multiple villa's in some far off sun soaked country to retire in and driving $200k sports cars to and from work, the fact of this business is your in it because you love it and if your lucky you'll make enough money to pay the bills and the odd naughty weekend with the wife (for me it's enough money to take Paul@DB's wife somewhere as mine is always pissed at me for the hours I work)
While I am certain we all strive to do the best we can mistakes happen and we all try our best to take care of them, for the most part customers are more than satisfied with the outcome but every now and then perhaps not so but again we all try.

OH SNAP!
So how does my weiner taste?
Another favorite are the non customers:
"Duuude...I bought this part online & I can't get it to work."
"Did you call the vendor you bought it from?"
"Yes! But he doesn't know how to fix it/won't return my call, etc"
"You saved, what, $50 by not buying it from me?"
"Something like that."
"Bet you wish you spent that extra $50 right about now."

Actually, on a serious note, my dad is a General contractor and owns a painting company... You'd be AMAZED at the kind of low ball offers some people come up with... My dad's company wont do cheap jobs, no way, no how... We pride ourselves with doing top notch work just like you guys do... Lets say we quote a house for $3000, we'll get low balled for $1500 because the Mexican dude with no work license says he can do it for 1k worth of spray paint and labor... Why do people even go to professionals if they want rookies that will basically get the job done, but not very well, nor do they guarantee their work for x-amount of time, nor are they getting an expert with 30+ years of experience doing that job.
There are 2 types of ethnic groups that are the WORST, but I won't mention which, but I think some of you guys know what I'm talking about.
