I suppose I should have said wisdom... wisdom is lacking. There is a big difference between intelligence and wisdom as demonstrated so well by a few people in this thread.
Would you call William Wilberforce stupid? or how about Tony Campolo or Dr. Frank Charles Laubach? Kenneth Kitchen?

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents… some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new Dark Age.”
Lovecraft was proposing, if you became fully aware of the reality of the universe, you would instantly go mad, and people feel safer just being ignorant( kinda like taking the Blue Pill). This idea is associated with 'Cthulu'. To gaze upon him is to go mad because seeing him makes you realize the horrible truth of the universe. (whatever that is can not is ever really specified in the book, some believe the truth is that there is no God, or that God is evil)
Lovecrafts point being, to see all there is to know is to be omniscient. To be Omniscient will make you insane, therefore if there is a God, he is a madman.
Family Circus tried to address this once, though I dont think it went over well with their fans

and i choose not to respond and i stick to my previous statement
