The Mach5 - v 2.0
Upgrades are already out
These upgrades are already out check your local option magazine.
It is just sick that Japan has had a few years to fiddle with the AVC(Active Valve Control) ECU and such.
The benifits would be insane.
The EVO VIII needs the AYC(Active Yaw control) to out do the STI's layout.
If Mitsubishi puts out their Direct Injection
(Fuel injector located in combustion chamber running close to 60:1 AF mixture, very lean and efficiant) motors here in the
good ole U.S.A. we would have taken the HP war to a whole new
level.
Maybe lowering the Valve control to 5000revs and upping the fuel cut to 7500revs would be good their won't be a huge fuel mapping and timing concern to go with it.
the AVC is controled by oil pressure wich could be controled by a solenoid in the engine bay...hmm.
Maybe we should rethink what are goals would be.
Do we want lower to mid gains or upper gains only?
IMO lower to mid gains woud be my concern for road racing.

In this japanese mag they have the downpipe and ecu upgrade for the USDM STi? Wow, Sounds like I have my first two mod's tucked away before I even get the car! I am excited to see what they can do with the STi motor with the ecu upgrade, the possibilities are far greater due to the AVS or whatever their acronym is...thanks!
The are only a few differences with USDM to JDM.
Displacement
Small tweeks in the ECU to compensate for it.
Japan had the AVS(watever the acronym is) for about four or more years.
Uppipe may be different (twin scroll turbo)
But they have removed cats from there.
turbo is by Mitsubishi plentyful options.
Down pipe should be the same upgrade as in stock WRXs.
What I would do to upgrade an STI if I ever owned one.
Intake or maybe just a K&N filter realy no gain in spending $350 for a intakepipe.
Down pipe to separate the waste gate flow and high flow cat
(If I were stateside).
2.5" pipe and no cats here, Yeah I know why not full 3"?
There would be only upper gains but we are talking street here there is no real advantage on the low to mid power gain why carry the extra weight when ground clearence might be compramised.
besides if you want to push close to 450hp+ then I would see the need for a
3" dia. pipe.
ECU uppgrade?
kick in the AVS at 5500 revs, bump the limiter to 8000revs get rid of the fuel cut while your at it and a small advance in timing below boost (I think the Subaru engineers maxed this department out already).
If there is room for real improvement, it would be in the fuel trim.
Most programing done to the factory ECU are fairly conservative.
On the rich side realy, the part of fuel trim that will be difficult to program is when the turbo comes on with the AVS kicking in a slew of parameters needing to be addresed.
Last thing intercooler but it has already been equiped with a sprayer.
Some minor improvements like that are one way to address the problem of space.
Having that sprayer is like having an intercooler as much as 20% larger than it is.
Fit a larger intercooler yes and keep the sprayer.
I would also rig the sprayer motor to an airtemp sensor and small temp controler to kick on automaticley at a certain airtemp.
That is Easly done using off the counter parts.
It is so hard not to get excited about this car sorry for the long post.

hey
just to clarify (cuz i am not sure if you are saying the mitsu turbo is the same or ddifferent on US STi) but the US STI has an IHI turbo, not a mitsu.
if i am pointing out the obvious, just ignore me...

PS 955 Daytona, option magazine can be had on the main land at any japanese book store. they are all over the place, depending on where you are from. it is a great mags for pics and some specs. you just need to learn how to read throught the japanese symbols, and look for #'s. it is amazing what you can pick up from pics only as well.

Jeff,
I'm just wondering how you know what the engine sounds like at 6k???? I'm sure that STI didnt have 1k miles yet
I'm hoping hear that sound this weekend....should be hitting that point tomorrow....but after a quick run through the gears I'll probably go back to my conservative self for a while (I'm just over cautious so it'll be a while till I find out what it's really made of)

figuered they were at the track bouncing off the rev limiter there what harm could their be if they already did that.
i'm one slick buggah!

Wife doesnt like going out much since her due date is close and shes having some minor contractions. Once she pops my social life is over for a couple months. Ok, edit, I have no social life, but what social life I dreamed about nightly and wish I could only attain wont happen for awhile. Too much recovery for her.
I think I got about 40 more to go.....and I know 1k isnt that special so after a good run I'll probably go easy again for a while since I'm too cautious! haha Well thats part of the reason I need my stereo again...damn I need more money.
As for the track....not sure when I'll make it out there. It's been years since I've gone and I dont hang out with many people that go anymore. Thats probably a good thing.

I could be wrong, it may just be an IHI turbo.
Though I do recall one of these brand name turbos using Mitsu.
centers compresser and turbine wheels.
250 miles to go
It's gonna be a few more days for me. I could probably do a lot of driving Saturday and make AutoX on Sunday, but I really want to change the oil to synthetic before I start pushing it too hard. I figure test & tune at the end of the month will be a better chance for me to get used to the car and I won't have to worry about my times a much. It sounds like there may be at least one STi out there Sunday (maybe 2 if Dave makes it out). I'll be out there in my trusty STi Wagon
