Thanks Mulder... the manual doesn't contain any specifics...
My VW had a aftermarket alarm made by "Electronic" or "Hofco"... can't remember, but it had a mic called a "sound discriminator" that was installed in the dash and would sound the alarm if you hit your keys against the window, (metallic or high freq. noises I guess) but your could knock on the window all you want w/o it activating... sounds like Subie has the same idea...
It would be nice when some idiot backs into your car on the street etc. or when an opened door hits your parked car that the alarm would sound...
Even though those alarms that chirp when you get close to the car are a bit annoying, they might prevent someone from bumping into your car... or, maybe not!
hehe

turn it counter clockwise to turn down the sensitivity.

Its as good as most other alarms. Most. Which means its not very useful. Almost all alarms are not only easily bypassed but ignored by people in general. With the module being far too easily accessible in the center console its only one of many ways to easily disable it before being noticed. Its also way to easy to pop the hood on a WRX... take the battery out of the equation and its easy to quietly disable the alarm.
I use the stock alarm system to have a noise maker, nothing more.. and believe my its modified to be LOUD. I don't expect it to stop someone from stealing my car. I have 8 other custom security measures on my car. I don't expect those will stop a thief either. But it will make it more difficult by a few minutes at best. Time is the thiefs worst enemy and my chance to catch him in the act. Every second more means more chance he'll be spotted or caught.

What do you guys think about the Autolock device that goes around the clutch or brake pedals? Seem's pretty solid...
It can't be easily cut, so how do thieves get around this?
Freeze the clyinder lock or ?

Ickkksss.... thanks for the info...
Thought they were more resistant to cutting with a hacksaw etc..
But it might stop the average bone head?
Guess there are two categories of theives:
the ones who smash and grab anything visible
and, the ones who are pro's and want your car to strip for parts...

Yeah and there's variations in between. Learning to steal cars is just like any "profession". The more you know and the better you are the hard the target you'll go for.
I look at it this way: I try to make my car harder to steal than is worth the relative effort... relative in terms of, a thief could make much more money or get more parts off a car that's easier to steal with more parts to gain.
And the stock alarm doesn't even provide that level for a WRX, by a longshot.

Jason,
You remember that movie about stealing Porsche 911's?
"No man's Land"
Story wasn't the best, but good chase scenes...
If they did a remake and made it about Sti's or WRX's being heisted with some Bullit style chases, that would be cool...

auto security should be approached in steps:
1) basic aftermarket alarm system with dual stage shock sensor and hidden ignition kill system (the addition of the ignition kill prevents the vehicle from being push started)
2) magnetic 2 wire hood switch (won't rust and some thieves try to disable the hood switch by cutting the wire, cutting with metal cutters will cause the 2 wires to connect and the alarm should go off)
3) hidden siren and/or battery backed up siren (in case the battery is disconnected)
4) interior mini piezo sirens
5) additional sensors such as Glass, Tilt, Motion etc
6) battery backup device for the main alarm
7) maxiguard hood lock (prevents someone from opening the vehicle's hood w/o unlocking the medeco cylinder lock)
8) multlock transmission lock (prevents someone from shifting the vehicle w/o unlocking the multlock shackle)
9) optional gps/cellular tracking using the aeris microburst technology to speed message sending/receiving
