damn the velocity stacks are expensive, do they really make that big of a difference or can i just make some type of plastic fitting to fill the gap inbetween the fender wall.

If you go to homoDepot, you could probaby find the pipes to make it work for around $10. I used a 3" rubber pipe connector ($5 from homoDepot) to stablize the "ram air" duct in the wheel well (since the silencer is gone)....I chose to get the velocity stack because it looks nice and fits perfectly...

water worries
I was a little concerned about the water getting in there as well. So deceided to keep checking for water coming in. I did the silencer removal and velocity stack mod and of course put the fender plug in. It's been raining alot lately so every couple of days or so I open the air box to check for signs of water coming in from the fender well. I have noticed a couple of water spots on the inside of the velocity stack but didn't appear to make it any farther than that. I haven't hit any big puddles of any sort, this is just from driving normal on mildly wet roads. My opinion is this, water CAN get inside the box from the fender well and if there is a big enough puddle it may cause a concern. I don't want to risk it,,, sooooo,, will probally put silencer back on.
Sucks because it DOES sound good!
Hope this info helps in your decision to do this mod.

ALSO
Just to add to last reply....
Didn't want to discourage you in anyway just adding peice of info for all.......
Left out the fact that if you did get water passed the filter, it would still have to travel down the intake, through the turbo(hot), through the intercooler and down through the intake manifold before it got to the internals where it could so some damage. That IS a very long way to go with vaporizing. SOOOOO, should you really worry about it????? It is up to you.

ive done the silencer hack awhile back. there isnt much noticeable gains except for maybe a slight quicker spool. but ive had no problems with water entering or anything. and it rains quite often around san francisco too.
silencer added with a k&n filter makes the turbo very loud. i can hear the turbo spool, the intake sucking in air, and the bov fairly well now. people from the outside are able to hear it as well.
