Gas Mileage Observations
I'm entertaining a couple small mod ideas.
I'm curious if anyone has paid attention to their gas mileage after removing the silencer from their car.
Also, Cobb Tuning's ECU Flash, anyone observe major changes in gas mileage? I'm thinking about the stage 1 upgrade for my currently stock WRX.
Thanks for any insight you can provide!

I'll agree to a point BAN...
My brother owns a 98 Eclipse GSX; basically the same thing as a WRX: 2L, awd, heavy pig car. Only it's better looking...
(j/k)
With his exhaust, intake, intercooler, fuel pump, and FPR, we saw a highway increase in milage from ~28mpg to 31mpg. We could see 33 if we were driving through complete flatlands..
the point is engine efficiency.. When the mods are done CORRECTLY, the engine will be more efficient, making more power at WOT but at the same time, burning fuel more efficiently while in closed loop.

My concern is mostly for the health of the car. To my knowledge you remove the silencer and your turbo comes alive a little bit sooner (my goal). I'm not so concerned with WOT gas mileage, WOT mileage is always the same--bad.

Any increase in air efficiency will improve turbo lag. In addition to removing the silencer, I recommend porting. I just ported my uppipe and turbo and it makes full boost almost 300rpm's sooner, as well as delivering it smoother and opening up the top end. Also, by porting the wastegate opening on the exhaust side (not too much, you don't want it to not seal properly) your turbo will hold desired boost levels better and reduce boost creep.
Driving style has the biggest impact on your mileage. Ive logged my MPG(for some unknown reason) for the last ~11000 miles. I notice no difference with the silencer on/off. But I did notice a decrease after getting my radar detector, instead of doing 70-75 on the freeway im now doin like 80-85(less efficient) Especially with mods like the silencer you aren't going to notice a difference, maybe with the uppipe or more extensive mods you'll notice an increase in efficiency.
