thoughts, observations, comments, advice, and musings from one i-clubber
Drama is stupid. But it always has been a part of this club (at least for the year+ that I've been around) and always will be. The reason for that is simple; i-Club is comprised of many many different people, all with different points of view, different values, different goals, etc. The ONLY thing that every single member here (well, damn near every one... Evo trolls notwithstanding
) has in common is their Subaru. Naturally, this sets the stage for silly little personality conflicts. Some people come here strictly for technical reasons. Some come here strictly for the sense of community a lot of us have talked about.
Personally, when I first relented to a friend and started reading the board (there was only one at the time, which gives this little bout of 'drama' some perspective) I cared strictly about the technical advice which I had found nearly impossible to find elsewhere. Meeting people and becoming a part of the site was the last thing I really wanted. But funny thing- the more I read, and figured out who each person was behind their screen handle, I found myself making friends in spite of myself. So I started going to meets, and began posting more and more often as I found myself knowing the answers to people's questions. Pretty soon, I was contributing so much that I was asked to be a moderator. And I accepted, because at that point, I felt I was very much a part of the i-club community and that I could "give back" so to speak by helping Alex to run the site and make it accesible to those who seek technical information.
But that's not the only way people contribute. People like Daniel, and Gagan, and Aaron, who have been friends with Alex since the beginning, and have shared his ideals of making a place where people would share a sense of community as well as technical information. Others, many others, have also embraced that idea and made i-club a great organization to be a part of. That's also important here.
Blah, I'm rambling (I warned you in the thread title). Here are my thoughts when I keep hearing people complain about **** around here.
-the *****ing about post count is petty, for the most part. post counts didn't mean a damn thing until a few months ago when Alex enabled avatars, as a way of recognizing people he felt were contributing most to the site. The day he did that, less than 5 people had enough posts to qualify. Within a matter of weeks, dozens of people had posted meaningless garbage for the supposed status gained from having an avatar. So, in Alex's attempt to have people recognized for beingcontributors, he failed, because people were subverting what he wanted it to be for.
-There is postwhoring, and there is postwhoring. Nobody, including Alex, ever complained about people posting up general things in the regional, technical or not, helpful or not, because it was part of the social activity that a lot of you want. And nobody is trying to stop that from happening. But claiming that you are being persecuted because you aren't being granted this artificial status of a postcount from gossiping and BSing is stupid. IT IS NOT THE NUMBER OF POSTS THAT GO UP THAT ALEX HAS A PROBLEM WITH. It was the fact that people were trying to create status and power out of something that shouldn't be. That was the source of most of the BS that happened on the old site and continues to happen on NASIOC. Power. Politics. Status. It's not why Alex spends a ridiculous amount of his time maintaining this website. So don't complain when he doesn't like what you are doing to it.
-To those of who who are very much a part of the BAIC community, but contribute more with your presence, with organizing meets, with simply being a part of something that you love- well, you are the ones getting screwed by all of this crap. You are the ones who should realzie that the changes in postcounts ARE NOT a slight against you. People like Ted, and Pete, and Daniel, who post little in the tech forums but are well known to i-club's members are certainly important to its identity and its function. Everyone here knows that those people are more important than their postcount indicates.
Everybody, just shut the hell up and get along. Jeez.

Though I don't know the whole story behind all this drama, I have to say that no matter what, even though I don't go to all the meets, I am glad I'm in the BAIC. There are so many people here with varying personalities, it just makes it a great place to be.

And I didn't promise anything about brevity or relative importance. Just wanted to put down what I feel, and how important recent events are, in words to solidify my own understanding of things around here.

Well said Kevin.....and as I have said in other posts....for ME, the post count doesnt mean isht....the avatar is cool, and yea, I would like one.....but that wasnt my reasoning for saying anything.....noticing my postcount at 8 down from nearly 1000 was simply a way for me to tell that "something" has changed....so I wanted to find out what was going on.....I dont care if I have 1 post or 1000 posts....all I REALLY care about is the cool ppl I have befriended (is that actually a word?) here. The main reason I started to B|+ch was because when ppl were saying all that crap about, "its just a number, blah, blah", but failed to realize that the reasoning that was given for the change made some ppl feel like they were not "true I-club members," or even worthy contributors to I-club, because they weren't posting in certain threads. So basically they felt like an "outsider."
Well, I am not trippin on anything....I just wanted to feel like I was a "real part of I-club", because I HAVE contributed to the LOCAL CHAPTERS, and have made many good friends as a result.
I have to get some work done now.......before the day ends.....
over and out
-Ted
