Ever think of it that way?
You see, I have driven an SRT-4. Yes, you are right, it is darn fast, but it handles and behaves like a FWD... Understeer, torque steer, loss of traction, etc...
I hate to repeat myself, but if going fast in a straight line and drag racing is your thing, then go for it! But it does not make the SRT-4 a better car!
I'll take the pants off of any SRT with my WRX on snow, gravel, mud, dirt, ice, or any other less than perfect road surface. And if the road is curvey, like the canyons we have here, then I'll see your SRT at the bottom of the gully!

I was actually shopping WRXs and the SRT4 at the same time, but decided on the SRT4 because it is faster out of the box, and probably has more potential to be faster (in a street race) than the WRX because of it's 0.4 liter advantage.I wasn't trying to say SRT4>WRX, because that isn't true. They both have their pros and cons. But what I was trying to point out to downshift is that a SRT4 can respond to modifications just as well as the WRX and it does not have weak internals like he suggests. Why else would MOPAR be designing staged upgrades that are suppose to make over 300 hp? If they thought the engine couldn't handle it the staged upgrades would require stronger engine components, which they do not. Heck, SRTGurl has only stage one and she's in the mid 12s beating Vipers and STis! Imagine what the SRT4 will do with stage three. BTW, stage one costs under $400, not $1000 like someone said.
As for racing: when is the last time you raced someone on an icy mountain pass road? Probably never. Now, when is the last time you raced someone at a stop light or on a stretch of freeway? Probably often. Most people are more likely to race on a straightaway than on a curvy road in real life, unless you autocross or do some other form of organized racing.

You are correct, both cars have their pros and cons. Apparently since you picked SRT over the WRX the SRT's is a better car for you. I, on the other hand, prefer the WRX. I love the feel of AWD and I'll trade off some of the speed for that. So the WRX is a better car for me. As you know, there are no absolutes in this world!
As far as the type of driving I do, the AWD is for me. I like to power through corners and I love the twisty stuff. Canyon carving and track racing is my thing. I dont drag often and on the highway I can still beat or keep up with 95%!
I did play with an SRT-4 on the highway once and we were pretty evenly matched. We could not open up all the way because there were other cars but he managed to hang off my **** and match me one-to-one...
As far as tuning potential, the SRT seems to have it. I am not sure how much safety and reliability margine you will be erroding with stage 3 and how long the car will last, but only time will tell. Afterall MOPAR needs to sell new motors and trannies

Not to be mean to the SRT-4 drivers but, it is a dodge. Dodge seems to make really cool cars but they don't hold up. If you beat it it will break. That is fine under warranty, but what about after that. I guess it's only 20k so you could just buy another one anyway. 2cents

Geez.....Its still a neon. I believe Dodge engineered the car to beat the WRX because every magazine stated the performance and build quality bargain of the Subaru. Then Subaru sold way more than originaly planned. Dodge is just competing for the market share. That just means more fun for those of us caught in the middle. Al last they build fast cars for the working man. I cant wait to race an SRT-4, if it beats me, I'll just work on the Subaru I own, and race them next time I see them. Ain't life Grand?

Mee too! But we'd need 3 subies, at least!
. You know, we could get 3-4 subie guys and do kind-of a "group buy": We'd sell our subies, get the money together, and buy one of these, kinda like co-op. Then we could just take turns using it, rotate ownership every couple of months. That way each one would get at least 3-4 months of driving it each year. Of course we'd split all the insurance, repair, and modding costs too.
This is just for you downshift.
You are well misinformed when it comes to the potential of the SRT-4. First off there is NO bottom end internal weakness of the 2.4. Infact there are many cars using that power plant in stock trim making in excess of 1200 hp. Refer to Sport Compact Car, they did a full tear down of the motor and revealed everything. I dont remember which month but it was within the last 6 months I believe, maybe someone else can help me out here. I WILL SAY IT: THE BOTTOM END IS PROVEN TO HOLD 1200+ HP!. Lets do this; we each get $400 bucks in upgrades. You take the WRX, I'll take the STR-4. Who wins in a drag race? Heres what I would do. Get the Mopar Stage I upgrade directly from Dodge, its $399 and includes a new ECU and 565cc injectors. The new ECU has an anti-lag feature built in. This allows you to simply hold down the gas pedal and run through the gears without once lifting off the throttle. This keeps the car inboost at all times and allows it to reach boost levels of 19-20psi. Guess what, the car is good for ticking off 12.9 runs in a good enviornment with a good driver. Whats that $400 gonna get you with the WRX? Not much.
Point of this is the SRT-4 is very potent. The stock turbo is good for 12 second passes. Although the car has way too much hp for its own britches it is a power house, a new age muscle car.

btw... I am a very happy owner of a WRX. I personally would have never bought the SRT-4 over it because I am a driving enthusiast. I consider myself an advanced driver. FWD just wont cut it for me. Look at my screen name and figure out my first automobile love. All in all I am very impressed with Dodge for even attempting keeping up with the newly imported Japanese "super" cars and quiet impressed with the performance of the SRT-4. The car in my eyes was a total hit and if I had the money I would buy one just to drive around and get myself into trouble. For someone young, just looking for a fun, fast car to drive around in the city I would DEFINATELY reccomend the SRT-4.

i drove my friends silver 04 srt-4 the other day. Hes got the bov from mopar which sounds awsome. But to tell you the truth, the car had a lot more slip than the wrx. The clutch also feels like a freakin toy. Its so loose. I loev my rex and ill never decide otherwise
