I am keeping my wrx so...I'll switch off between the two.

Heres my take on it. I have become a much better driver in all senses since I got my WRX. The stiffer I make it, the more I learn about how it handles, and the more road feedback I can digest. I think I could handle a sport bike personally, but I also feel that I don't need to use 100% of its potential to begin. I definitely wouldn't try to use my power to correct for things I do wrong..that just sounds dumb to me. I prefer a bike thats straight to the point, and thats exactly what the 600RR is.

lol, its very apparent you haven't ridden a street bike.

go to www.bayarearidersforum.com and talk to the folks over there. they can help shed some light on your situation (just like every other person wanting a 600 supersport as their first bike)

edit*

you don't even have to post, simply do a search over there and you'll see a bajillion posts about 600 supersports as first bikes, and how HANDS down 90% of the people say one should start on a more forgiving bike. mind you, these are people with actual riding experience, most above the 10 year mark. you don't really know what you are getting yourself into.

im not saying you are going to die, im just saying its a poor decision to choose a 600rr as a "beginners" bike. why not learn from others mistakes. Plus all those reasons you say you are getting a bike are VERY easily met by a more forgiviing motorcycle, say the SV650. Even a ninja 250 out accelerates a wrx...

just admit you enjoy the posing factor. like i said, if you just want to pin it and park it and hang out at starbucks be my guest. there's tons of tools exactly like that, most of which you will think are SUPER DUPER cool.

...ssssince you've totally met original poster and can put him in whatever category you want~

im pretty sure tools that buy liter bikes to race out of red lights and cruise thru car meets to show off would NOT bother posting a thread like this for public to see, which to a tool shows weakness, doubt regret etc.

trust me, you wont get CLOSE to using the full potential of the bike.... and if you do I hope it would be on the track, pushing your limit on a bike in the city streets or mountain roads is very dangerous. just because you can handle your car doesnt mean you can handle a bike. ride safe dude. my .02 cents......

I agree with everyone....if you want to go the safest route, start on a 250cc. if you want to go the sexy route go with a 600cc.

I have about 10 friends including me that all started on 600cc's (no spills yet) and All of us are still alive (thank god),

I just upgraded to an R1 because i like POWAAA!!!

Nothing on that site is new to me. I still consider getting a ninja or equivalent first and then going on to the bike of choice. All this is assuming I can pick up ANY bike without getting kicked out of my house.

Anyway, I'm pretty much done replying to your posts as you seem to like to personally attack me, but the ninja is no where near my wrx. Not even a stock one. Sorry. Again, quit being a tool. I let the idiot comment slide, I brushed it off. I know BAIC is lacking the drama these days but...go throw your baseless claims elsewhere.

Also, I told you why I wanted a bike. Not why I wanted THAT one. There is a difference.

600rr is fine for a first bike
youd want a fuel injected bike anyways.
03 600rr was my first bike, loved it but sold it to get an 06 r6
just make sure u dont spend too much money buying a pristine *** one.

Not to mention I dunno if I can ride a bike thats slower than my car, lol
I'm average asian girl height (5'2, 110lbs) and as my first bike, the f4i worked out just fine. Lots of people say its a lot heavier of a bike compared to other r6's 600rr's. I think that as long as you know how to limit yourself and not go throttle happy then it'll be okay. Its also a good time to buy right now, once it hits riding season the prices go up. Plus the likeliness that you're going to let it down is high so you shouldn't spend too much on an expensive first bike.

here you go, if you're looking for something that looks sick but something you could really practice on , the new 2008 Ninja 250r's have a new look to them, i dont quite trust myself on a 600 yet (though i've ridden my friends gsxr750 a bunch of times)but i plan on tuning my skills on this

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/Articl...ID=5342&Page=1

goodluck with whatever decision you make! but for me i'd rather make a mistake on a 250 than a nice 600.

i took my first bike (EX500) to a lapping school at pocono east a while back and the other guys in the novice group with me had fancy 600cc bikes (600rr, gsxr600, 1000rr etc)

i think i learned the most because i could actually process what was going on.. everyone was whacking the throttle really hard and going faster than me, but they were all waaay off the line.. one guy actually dumped his bike

beginner bike means its easy to learn not, not that its not fun or not capable

I'm looking into getting a first bike. I'm currently 17 and i think that the ninja 250 (ex250) would be the right bike for me. is this too weak, should i look into the 500's or is this about right?

Cheap to run, Cheap to fix. Cheap or no bodywork, And it teaches you to learn how to ride, Not just wack a throttle and go straight.

Buy a 250/500 ride the **** out of it, Drop it, Crash it, learn on it. Then move up. You will be a more respected rider in the long term.
What makes one a "top rider"? I learned to ride @ age 15 on an '81 Harley Sturgis. Seems like people on here would think I would burst into flames and die just thinking about riding something like that for the first time. That was my dad's (he built them) and my first bike was an '82 Yamaha XV-750 which was/is a GREAT starter bike. Don't just look at the engine size - this is a V-twin that redlines around 7k and prolly has around the same hp as a Ninja 250-R, but it has torque that makes learning to start off MUCH easier.

In contrast a 4cyl 750 like a GSX-R or something would be a whole different story.

The thing is, a throttle is NOT an on/off switch. Most of these bikes that "wind up too fast" or "have too much power" as people have been saying here are actually very nice to ride and quite tractable at lower RPMs. Why does everyone think that someone will shift @ redline on every shift and therefor should replace the ability to restrain oneself with a smaller engine? I set myself a personal limit to not pass 8krpm on my first ZX-6 because.. I knew I wasn't ready for it. It's pretty easy to do and gives you a goal/fun thing to work toward. Sorta like the break-in on your new WRX just.. Much longer.

On the other hand, I have a buddy who JUST started riding yesterday. He asked me what I recommended to start out and I suggested to start with the MSF. He finished that, and found a 250r which he is TOTALLY stoked with. We'll see where he's at in a year or so, but I think he might stick with it. Your results may vary.

I understand that it is "probably not a good idea" to start on a high horsepower streetbike. This is obvious and does not even need to be said. I feel that if someone who takes an interest in vehicle control as well as their life and USES THE PROPER PROTECTIVE GEAR and always rides aware (as in, assume everyone is trying to kill you because they are) will be fine with a 600 class bike to start. Others may disagree, and that is ok.

In short, 'pwn' should talk to riders he respects, and make his own decision. Also - having Daredevil on the ignore list makes for a much more pleasureable i-club experience. He might have things to say, but they are always lost in the delivery. Once you leave highschool, there is no need for all that BS.

That actually makes a lot of sense, and if you are trying to learn trackday performance and how to HANDLE a bike - the ability to "run out of power" can teach you a lot about getting though a corner faster while the other guys are drag-racing you in the straights and tipping over in the corners....
