I ride a ZX-6R and a Bandit 600. Like 06STi said, a 600RR is not a good choice for a starter bike. But regardless of what bike you start on, take the MSF safety course.
why not have a 600rr as a first bike? i bought a 06 600rr for my first bike and loved it. Motor sat lower to the ground on that bike and it made the bike feel so much lighter, easy to toss around.

I wasn't trying to sound preachy, haha. Its become an automated response after spending to much time on BARF.
But generally speaking, its not a good choice because its a powerful bike and winds up really fast. Additionally, a bike like the 600RR is very sensitive to small changes and inputs. And it can be hard some people to get out trouble if they have inexperience. I think its put out as a general warning. And its not meant specifically for 600RRs, but supersport bikes in general.
A person should be get whatever bike they want. But a bike like an EX500 is more forgiving than a 600RR or a GSXR600. If a person does get a supersport as a first bike, they should know what they are getting into and act accordingly. Thats all I'm saying. I'm all for new people joining the riding community, but its sad too see new riders get hurt because they get in over their head.
pwn: you should get whatever bike you want. Just be smart, invest in good gear, and take the MSF class. the biggest danger to riders really isn't themselves, it people in cars not paying attention. I know from experience; crashing sucks, especially when its from some one being careless.

EX500 or SV650 are better to start off, they are cheaper to insure and cost less to fix when you drop em (less plastic)
600rr is a nice bike though.
EDIT: newenough.com has a good sale on gear right now. HJC AC-12 for $79, 1piece joe rocket leathers for $399
i sold my bike cuz engagement rings are stupid expensive.. i can't wait to get another bike

Car Info: you've got an electrical problem.
Most top riders started off on small cc bikes. A ex500 or ex250 is a great cheap starter bike.
Cheap to run, Cheap to fix. Cheap or no bodywork, And it teaches you to learn how to ride, Not just wack a throttle and go straight.
Buy a 250/500 ride the **** out of it, Drop it, Crash it, learn on it. Then move up. You will be a more respected rider in the long term.

What about an older 600? iIke the 99-02 R6 or an older F4i?
Im a decently sized guy (6', 185lbs), so I think id feel silly on a 250
Not to mention I dunno if I can ride a bike thats slower than my car, lol

An F4i is still a quick bike - standing 1/4 in 10.6 and 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. Actually, the RRs are considered more stable than the F4i.
You could check out the new Kawasaki 650R (EX650) parallel twin. A workmate of mine just bought one as his first bike and he loves it.
Another first bike consideration is that many new riders drop their bikes - mostly toppling over in parking lots at low/zero speed. This obviously can cause a lot of $$s worth cosmetic damage, so many people recommend naked and/or used bikes for first rides.
