Needless to say, that'd be a **** turn to slide off of at 7pm in the middle of a blizzard haha

Saturday morning - Early Am Sunday is supposed to be the brunt of the storm.
That said, they're calling for the worst of it to be south of 80 and west of 89. You can still expect FEET of snow at the higher altitudes of 80 though... If you must go up, I'd recommend to anyone/everyone that they do it on Friday during the Day.
Hey guys, heading up to Kirkwood on Sunday and I am trying to figure out the best way to get there based on the upcoming conditions. Is Highway 50-89 a better route or Highway 88? I am coming from Folsom but can always go around if need be...

That would be your best bet as Carsons Pass always closes for Avi control and with the amount of snow on Saturday, its safe to say it may be closed sunday morning.
We just came across as it STARTED on 88 and needless to say, it's seriously nasty. 25-40mph winds, fine powder and near white out in spots already. There's literally up to 6" of powder on the ROAD in spots, and it's getting seriously slick. The Jeep tackled it fine, but I imagine if it gets much worse, which it's supposed to.... there won't be any Kirkwood access on either Saturday OR Sunday.
Took these at Silver Lake which is at a slightly lower elevation than Kirkwood, and you'd still have to run up Carson Pass from the back side if you came from 50-89.
Also make SURE you have chains in the vehicle as they have checkpoints setup and I imagine they are checking for them. If you have snow tires and AWD you're not required to run them AT THE MOMENT (I imagine this too, will change). If you don't have them, I'd suggest dropping by O'Reilly's and plopping down 90$ for a pair.
Anyhow.... At Silver Lake....

These here were taken at about 6000 ft.

And it's even starting to snow as low as 4000ft....

Needless to say, it's gonna be a great weekend to kick off the season IF you're already up here. Otherwise, I'd advise exercising extreme caution. It's gonna be nasty for the next few days.
Cheers gents.
And P.S. I'll say this again (had a couple people take me up on this already)
If you DO come up here, please PM me and get my contact info. I'll have no problems hopping out of bed to recover someone in need. I'd rather have you covered than find out later that someone didn't heed enough caution to the wind and ended up snowbound for 24 hours and still had to pay a 300$ tow bill.
)
It's supposed to snow like this all day, and in fact, get heavier. At the moment visibility is roughly 300-400ft and I imagine once the winds kick up and the snow picks up it'll probably drop to under 100ft. If i ad to guess, I'd say their estimates of 12-24" today will probably be in the higher end of that figure if it keeps up like it is.
Last night was surprisingly uneventful and probably would've been a great time to charge up 50 to get up here, but now is a totally different story.
Edit:
Here you can see on top of the railing that we've got about 3-4" of accumulation from this morning, and my Jeep in the background that had nothing on it last night is now covered with powddaaaa.

Last night's storm was wicked on the coast and it's barely getting to the Sierra. I wouldn't be surprised if the resorts remained closed until Monday. I also read that avi danger is high. News is also reporting that 80 is closed. Stay safe everyone.
We've gotten about 8-12" so far today already.....
