I had a blown engine due to negligence, but it was more complicated than that. Oil change place had put the wrong filter on the car, it worked properly but it was a tall instead of a shorty. This caused the oil filter to hang below the chasis, when crossing some railroad tracks it ripped the oil filter off and by the time I got down a block away the engine had seized.

You may be able to get something done but only if something actually caused it, if the car just gave up the ghost you're **** outta luck.
