WTH? WRX insurance is higher than STi insurance?

WTH? WRX insurance is higher than STi insurance?
I'm shopping for an imprzza of some variation and decided to compare insurance rates for the STi and WRX since the difference in the rate may have been enough to sway me one way or the other.
Quotes for the WRX are about $500-700 higher per year than the STI! I figured the much more rare car with more expensive bits, higher power, and higher total cost would have higher insurance. Both quotes were for '05 models.
What's the deal here? Has anyone else encountered anything similar?
I think I may wind up going with the WRX anyway since even with lower insurance the STi will still cost me too much, but I was hoping the WRX would have lower insurance to make me even more happy.
