I run 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 as my main guns. I do have a single 5.56 platform however. My rifles are set up for 100-300 yards, so there is negligible (if any) differences in accuracy between the 3 calibers (I am talking about putting the target down, not winning marksmanship competitions). Just my personal preference/experience...plus I am Russian, so it is almost a requirement

Evil nasty tumbling mother****er.
The 5.45 is designed to keyhole, and with that much power it will punch thru you no matter what shape and size it is.
A clean bullet hole turns into a mangled cavity.

Dont they call that 5.45x39 the black death? Lol. They used that round to mow down the enemy back in the day.

but the original Russian military stuff is a nasty piece of work...I know my surplus 7N6 rounds have "hollow cavity nose" design along with a steel core penetrator. As I undertand, the air pocket distabilizes the bullet to make it tumble and fawk some sh*t up real good. Unfortunately, ATF just banned any further importation of that stuff, so I am going to be sad when they last of the stock disappears
I am going to guess the cilian made rounds can't be made to same standards (which was already more expensive). I used to buy it for $0.13-15/round...right now it is $0.20-25...non surplus is $.25-0.40. Le sigh.

I am not sure about that nickname

Some people in other countries are very superstitious about the 5.45x39. They think it has evil spirits bc they say that if the bullet hits you that you die. This for a with what Nathan said*
The 5.45x39 7n6 round earned it's nickname "The Poison Bullet" during the Russian's little 9 year excursion into Afghanistan in the 1980's. The 5.45x39 bullet has a very, very nasty habit of beginning to tumble at ~7cm of tissue penetration (7.62x39 begins it's tumble at ~20cm). That early pitching and yawing, described as an almost corkscrew-like erratic course through the body, causes huge amounts of internal injuries with COM shots. One other quirk of the 5.45x39 is a near 90 degree veer off course near the end of it's travel.
This erratic path, along with the weird veering off at an odd angle makes finding and treating the wound path almost impossible, especially with primitive medical means. With the 7.62x39, an Afghan medic could hope to probe the path to find and extract the bullet. With the 5.45x39 probing was useless. Toss in lack of antibiotics and sterile operating rooms one can see Gangrene becoming a major killer among Afghans shot with the so called "poison bullet"!

Good bit of info. I knew what it did, never looked into actual specifics.

And why? Why not? Isn't that like asking why we need any type of hollow point ammunion? It is not like getting a double tapped by a 62gr hollow point 5.56 is any more cozier. It will kill the sh*t out of you just as well
Let's not get into that discussion please. That's a slippery slope.
Unfortunately the rumors are true, the ATF has banned any further importation of Surplus 5.45X39mm ammunition in to the United States. Please do not contact us with questions regarding the ban, all the information we currently have is posted in this article. We will update this article as soon as we have any more information.
All surplus 5.45x39mm contains a steel core of varying hardness depending on its year of production. Although this ammunition does not reach the standards to be classified as "Amor Piercing" or "AP", no ammunition may be importable with a steel core if there is an available handgun to be purchased by the civilian market that will fire that round.
It appears that someone created a 5.45x39mm Pistol, therefore the ATF has ruled that no further importation of this ammunition shall be approved which contains a steel core. All new production of this ammunition does NOT contain a steel core and therefore will continue to be produced and or imported and sold in the United States. This is the same scenario which occurred with the Surplus 7.62x39 many years ago when the ATF banned the import of that round as well.
All current stock of 5.45x39mm, including private collections can still be sold, traded and used in your weapons. The ban is strictly on the importation of this round.

If in doubt, FLAT OUT

You need hollow point because it shouldn't overpenetrate and will exhaust most of its energy in the target. A .22 can kill you the same dead too. And yes, I know that's a very slippery slope.

Nice where I live a lot of people are saying 99% of the time it's a no. supposedly the chief doesn't like ccw therefore turns down almost everyone unless it's 100% need for one to have a ccw. I still want one however lol.
