The news said it rated 5th-6th largest quake in history of all quakes so that is probably why Jeremy said that.

if its a 8.9 it'l be in the 6, 7, or 8th slot. if its 8.8 itl be in the 7-11th spot. depends on a more finite measurement.

Thanks for the correction, it would have really been a shame if Arica Chile got knocked out of their prized #5 slot over all this.

8.9 is the largest on record in the history of Japan.

The USGS has tracked over 70 aftershocks since the big one last night. Most of those being 5.5 or larger.

I haven't seen anything about a quake closer to Tokyo itself yet. It looks like most of the aftershocks were centered around the first quakes epicenter.

Phones have been in and out all day over there, cellular network is/was down as well.

There are just aftershocks everywhere along the eastern side of Japan. here is an up to date map of them: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak.../10/140_35.php

Finally heard back from one my friends in Tokyo. She+the other girls are ok. Their offices+apts got tossed around pretty good, but overall, sounds like no serious damage. Their fams are farther north, so I guess they're ok.

Haircutter dude said he+his fam are ok too, but things are really chaotic over there. Basically all reported already.. 1000 missing (more, according to the news), no subway service, flights cancelled+several airports shut down. Lota folks stranded all over Tokyo. He says there's been numerous aftershocks too. Sounds like those won't subside for a while. Apparently, major quakes are always clustered w/large aftershocks for up to weeks or even months afterwards.

Thoughts+prayers to those affected. Hang in there.

^That post isn't worth of even posting. I wouldn't call that much of anything compared to the buildings that were floating on fire with the ocean in Japan.

Not saying it was anything in comparison to what happened there. Merely showing how massive the event was that it made it this far.

Final friend has finally checked in and is well. Hope the rest of you get in contact with your families and such that are still missing.
