it is a bad design, but -1 to taking it to a "save me money" type of shop.
those places don't "Save you Money" anymore.

I took my wife's vw in there cause I was too lazy to do it myself..it was pretty much what the dealership would charge...shoot more than what the dealership charges to do my subaru.

That's why 90% of the time I do it myself.

My roommate spent $15 on his oil change. So yeah, it saved him money in the sort term.

But if you do your oil changes @3k miles with regular oil, and pay $15. (coupon), you'd have to get 2.15 oil changes by the time you did a single oil change using moble 1 synthetic with a good filter. So, I guess you really aren't saving money at all.

Well obviously the shop got it off so it was not Subaru that was wrong. the design is set for failure, but if the Shop hadn't tightened it down so much you would have never had the issue.
to me it seems like your post should say I dont like subaru and I really hate jiffy lube right now.

and those shops may save you money, but in the long run it will cost you because eventually they will have a lazy day and mess something up, or drive your car around the parking lot like an a$$hat.

either way, I am glad the car is back to working and I bet the next time the oil is changed it wont be such a big deal because you did it yourselves.

subaru recommends every 7,000.

I usually just look at my oil. Sometimes it's perfectly clean at 3-4000. Sometimes it's really dirty. Depends on how hard I drove those miles and in what kind of conditions. I'll change my oil as short as 3000 and as far off as 5 but never more than 5000.

7000 is too long unless you only commute and never hit boost.

7000 is fine if you use moble 1 synthetic with a good filter.

I try to do it at around 6k cuz I can feel the hp decrease.

used oil can make more H.P. Its thinner and the crank spins up faster with less drag

We dyno service bike before and after the service al the time. As it shows the customer why his bike is making a little less after the oil change.

I already use thin oil, and its sythetic... the HP loss is due to the oil breaking down.

Actually, I've had my oil tested at 6200 and it was in great condition. They recommended that I try 7000. So, I've stuck to 7000 and I don't feel as if there's anything wrong with it. No one believes me and thinks it's better to change it sooner, but it saves money in the long run.

I drive a WRX and the lab that tests oil has noticed our motors are actually very friendly to oil.

I drive my cars pretty hard... So I think this is all relative to how you drive.

I'm lucky all my services are free @ the dealerships, but I've got about 18K miles left. I do my own oil changes so I'm not looking forward to that undertray thingy mah bobber when I hit 36K miles.

just remove it completely or cut a hole in the undertray to access the filter/drain bolt
