I totally should have refused. But, I was on my way to work and I don't want to get stuck there arguing with the cop. If I did refused, I think the situation could have gotten uglier.

I think he looked stupid after he stopped me and I told him the exhaust was stock. So he was trying to find "something" or anything to pin me to for the stop. Well, egg on his face for being an idiot.

I think I would have refused, especially since there is absolutely nothing else he could have dinged your for in traffic in a brand new car. As always, I am grateful for this opportunity to share my great hate for the CHP. FFFFFFFFFFFFF(vowel)CKKKKKKKk the CHP!!!! bastard losers. goddamn.

If you screw with the man, the man screws with you. And guess what, the man has a much bigger screw.

true, but by refusing to consent to an unwarranted search of your vehicle is the right thing (for me) to do. Just doing whatever a cop (or anyone for that matter) tells you to do rather than questioning it (either to yourself or outloud) only gives them more power. Which they don't need.

Edit: I had quite the rant going here so I deleted it...

but if I was on my way to work I would have wanted the whole thing over with asap as well...

... but back when I was a teenager...

Hey... maybe the fact that factory cars are starting to look like highly modified imports will confuse the CHP and make them question themselves before pulling the real mods over???

Ha! fat chance... I'm sorry but I'm chuckling over this. I would have gone along with him and gotten outa there quick too, but I would not miss his name cause I would call his boss and complain. He did not have reason enough to detain you. Plain and simple. Once he new you weren't in violation of what he pulled you over for, he had no authority to detain you any longer and shold have sent you on your way.

I'm trying to get this straight, if you're not speeding or driving dangerously and you get pulled over and are asked to pop your hood, can you refuse to do it without any consequences?
