pulled over today for having a modified exhaust

got pulled over today minding my own business doing 60 in traffic on 101 when a chp in a camaro pulls me over. He tells me he sees i have a modified exhaust (bosal single tip) and told me to pop the hood, give him the keys and step out of the car. I told him i don't know anything and that i bought the car that way. He then told me to open the hood for him (i guess he didn't know how to open one?) and began to poke around aimlessly while i stood by the passenger door looking at him. He told me to keep my hands to my sides and continued to fiddle around like a blind man while my hks downpipe was right in front of his face. Finally he closed my hood and asked me if i raced, i replied "No" and he continued to talk about how my car looks like "one of them lancer evolutions" and that i could get on my way. No ticket was written.

Point of the story is beware of those chp's that have nothing better to do but waste people's time fiddling around engines aimlessly while lawbreakers are everywhere.

God what a douche cop, if he knew anything about cars, you'd be headed to the smog ref!

Legally, I don't think that he could do that. The only way he could pull you over is if you were extremely loud and he thought that you broke the decibel law. I would lodge a complaint, but since you have changed your emissions, then its better to just do nothing. I am a criminal law major, I will find out about that and let you guys know. Cops like that give good cops a bad name. Sorry to hear about the harrassment. I'm glad that nothing ended up happening!

that's exactly what happened to me. Except he didn't ask me to pop my hood, and he said "isn't this a lancer evolution?" then he let me go and told me to drive slow....wtf. haha

thats not harrassment. in the cops view it was loud and he legally has the right to assess it, literally, by ear. by looking under the hood he actually gave the driver a chance. He didnt see any obvious violations, so he assumed there's nothing really bad happening here and let him go. Had he seen something that made him wonder, he probabaly would have cited the driver for modified exhaust (which is a noise issue, not a smog issue) and sent him to the ref. when you go to the ref he can visually inspect what ever he likes, no matter what the ticket was written for. If the ref finds a flaw during visual... you get the idea.

96db is not extremely loud.

All cops have ears. Not many have car knowledge. Sections 27150 and 27200 give cops an edge over a lack of knowledge. Harrassment is by the cop who writes the ref ticket cuz he doesnt like your car or you or your looks. Sounds to me like this guy was just doing his duty... cocky or not.

Besides, if you end up at the ref and PASS, you have documentation in your car that you are legal for the decible limit.

I think it is illegal for them to make you pop your hood. I guess you took a chance by showing him what you got.

there's a reason why dmv sends you two plates...and when u dont abide by the set rules, it's really hard to justify how your complaint is valid.
