Alcoholics go to meetings, we are just drunks. I had to look that one up. Reading "Captain Morgan" shut it down for me. Can't stand that stuff, too sweet and syrupy.

When I lived in England, people would like to drink SoCo with lemon juice which was also a little retchy. Another one over there was Malibu and Coke which I don't think I will ever understand.

Just give me a bucket of proper ale or at best a glass of scotch. I am a big fan of The Balvenie. Not saying it's the best, just that I really like their stuff (even the DoubleWood which is cheap). The 17yr Sherry Oak was my fav so far. Scotch and, well, most things, are a personal taste so there really is not a "best" but you can definitely have a favorite!

You can't lose with JW Blue which you can get at Costco now cheaper than I have seen it in ages. That stuff is so smooth you have to say "smoof" when you drink it.

Laphroag and the like should absolutely be tasted before buying because you will either love it or barf. It's also an acquired taste so it can lurk on your shelf for a few years until you appreciate it.

It's really worth-while and pretty fun to go out with some friends and taste different Scotch whiskies. Take notes, and see what you like the best and go from there. Good times that you may or may not remember later.

Now we're talkin! It's hard to beat a good single malt Scotch. I'm not a big fan of the blended whiskys like Johnny Walker, Chivas, etc. Although I will agree with you that Blue Label is extremely smooth. My favorite single malts include Glenlivet 21, Macallan 18 (which I prefer even over the Macallan 25), and Lagavulin 16. The Lagavulin however, is an aquired taste for sure. Lots of smoke and peat flavors. It's very smooth going down, once you get over the initial burn.

I'm a firm believer in drinking Scotch neat with a drop of water. No ice cubes, and certainly never mixed with any soda.

Macallan, yes, forgot about that one. It's been a while since I have picked up a good bottle. I should fix that.

Agreed with the drop of water. It's cool to watch it swirl. An old friend told me that this really opens up and releases flavors. The only time I use ice is with things like Makers, and it's a cube from one of these:
Tovol Ice Mold Tovol Ice Mold

What do you think about Oban? I don't remember it and mean to pick up a bottle one of these days.

I've only tried the Oban 14 and thought it was quite good, but nothing spectacular. I liked it better than Macallan 12, Glenfiddich 12, etc but then again, it's twice the price as the others.

For the price of a bottle of Oban 14, you can get a bottle of Glenlivet 18 which in my opinion is a superior Scotch.
