As I understand you, you were cited for having a loud exhaust system. You said it was loud. In decibels, how loud is it and did it exceed the threshold stated in the ordinance. I'm assuming the jurisdiction you were in has a noise ordinance. If the jurisdiction has such an ordinance and you exceeded the threshold noise level measured in decibels, your chances of beating this rap is extremely small. Next question, how did the cop know you exceeded the noise threshold? Does he have a noise meter, and what was the reading. . If you were cited only because your car is equipped with exotic equipment that does not mitigate the safety features of your car, you are not living in America. He shouldn't be citing anyone just because he thinks an exhaust system is lould. I'm curious about Harley motorcycles and whether they are allowed there. Here in Albuquerque, most of them are louder than a drag car at the strip, so it seems, and I know of no one who has ever been cited. About the only noise control effort here is the prohibition of jake brakes for semis when going through residential areas in small New Mexico towns.
Can you cite the ordinance? I would like to know the specific provisions.
PS - Don't remove the equipment if you don't have to. Go easy on the gas pedal in town as this quiets the car some and you might not be noticed.
