buying a shot gun. tips
yes, im going to buy a shot gun.
and the reason why im buying a shot gun is because my family is moving to east oakland. and that is the only reason. just to be self protection. past 2 months my friend who lives like few blocks away almost got broken in to. the sister was at home, and she is pregrent. luckly the cop showed up before they could got in to the house.
so im just looking for a decent size shot gun. i don't need a huge one that can blow my self back. any ideas? and which store should i been looking at? what types of shells would be good.

Can't go wrong with an short barrel 870. If it were me, I wouldn't buy anything but a benelli though. I love mine! If you go the 870 route, then you can pick one of those up and any big 5.

I have a Winchester D1300 w/an 18" barrel that has never let me down. Just don't try to shoot trap with it. It isn't going to happen unless you have a friend that can't throw far.

yeah big 5 sells them for hella cheap. i would get a ghost ring sights for better aim,
and i cant stress it enough. GET BIRD SHOT for your rounds. They wont over penetrate in the walls potentially causing someone else harm.
Where in east oakland are you moving to? Im curious as to the area.,

I don't want to sound like a critic or a jerk here, but wouldn't people also advise some training courses/overall weapons training? Especially for anyone not familiar with shotguns, or with arms at all? I will admit that I'm a weapons noob, having only shot .22s years ago, which is practically nothing in the arms world. I too was thinking about purchasing a shotgun some time ago, but I was planning on looking into some training courses to familiarize myself with the general basics of gunownership, not just pulling the trigger. Just so that I would have some knowledge, maybe some experience in case the unthinkable were to happen. Is this something new gun owners should look into just to be safe?
Please tell me if my reasoning is lacking or if I'm missing something.

If you think you'll be able to buy a shotgun and some ammo, store it under you bed, and then be able to effectively use it if someone breaks in, you're sorely mistaken. Shooting a shotgun is like shooting any gun....it isn't easy to do well. As anyone that has had any experience shooting can tell you, even hitting a target at room distances can be damn hard if you've never done it before.
Before you buy anything, please go to a range. Rent a shotgun, see what it feels like. Shoot some rounds, see the kinds of patterns it shoots at different distances. I bet you'll be surprised. A standard 870 shooting bird shot at 20yds will still shoot a pattern about the size of your fist. Do you think you'll be able to hit an intruder (assuming you should even be shooting at him in the first place), at night, while he is moving/running/ducking for cover with something the size of a fist on your first try? Hell f'in no you won't.
If you're serious about getting a shotgun for home defense, don't worry so much about what KIND of shotgun you get. Rather, focus on being able to USE whatever it is you end up getting effectively. I'd be much more afraid of a skilled guy with a single-shot .410 than some guy with a semi-auto 12ga that has never shot it before. Take classes. Go to the range often enough to keep your skills sharp. Try different kinds of ammo - know what your gun likes, what kinds of patterns it will shoot at given distances, etc. Conduct research. Know what kind of penetration different kinds of ammo offer. Leave nothing to chance.
I see that some have recommended bird shot for defensive purposes. I've heard this from a lot of people. Birdshot MIGHT work. Buckshot WILL. If you're fighting for your life, do you want to bet your life on what MIGHT stop the intruder? While over-penetration is an issue, you probably won't be worrying about it too much if you don't make it out alive.
Oh, and no one here has mentioned it yet, but I am sure they will in due time. NEVER rely on the SOUND of your shotgun racking to "scare" off intruders. That's absurd, moronic, and retarded. If your shotgun is for home defense, it should already be loaded and racked. A shotgun without a shell chambered is about as effective as a club. If someone breaks in, you might not even have time to get to your gun, let alone chamber a shell. Don't let this happen to you. If someone needs shooting, the first "sound" they should hear should be their last.

Get a lot of training to use the shotgun properly. Louis Awebuck has great shotgun training courses. http://www.yfainc.com/courses.html#shotgun1
