If the perp pulls a knife on a officer at less than 21 ft away, most police depts have a policy to shoot, no questions asked.

 

21ft definitely makes total sense. the whole story has to come out first to determine if the officer or suspect was bad. either way. people will always take it the bad way. esp after what happened almost 2 years ago.

 

Millions of people ride bart every year. No problems .... then we have a few trouble makers.. I think since the odds are stacked against you. If you play... you gotta pay. The cop is only doing his job.

 

but maybe bart cops shouldn't be packing any more than a tazer.

This makes 2 instances where bart cops shot and killed someone but I can't remember a reported incident of anyone else shooting someone in the bart system.

 

Controversial prediction: no one will care because the dude that got shot was white.

 

Im pretty sure it was because they shot the last guy in the back when he was restrained on the ground in front of a hundred people with camera phones that posted on youtube and went viral, that caused the last fiasco.

 

Why should BART officers have less ability to protect us/themselves than a on the surface officer?

You pull a weapon on an officer, you are going to die... that's been the score for more than 100 years

 

There are plenty of violent acts on public transportation, especially people getting stabbed. You havent heard of anyone else shooting a civilian because of BART officers doing what they have to...so it seems they're doing their jobs right. What this officer did was right, assuming all the facts are right.

I think BART officers carrying guns is great, as long as they are properly trained (which they are).

 

A lot of different countries and law enforcement jurisdictions do not have armed officers, I know the gun fanatic mentality cannot understand such a concept but it actually works pretty well in places where that is the case.

...so how again is that second amendment protecting you from "Tyranny"?

So since a sworn police man took out a guy with a knife. We ban guns? Why not ban knifes? I am sure the bad guys will be more then happy to turn over their guns right? So let's put you in joe blows shoes. Your walking along and someone comes up with a knife. You yell at the guy to put the knife down. He doesn't.... doesn't listen... respond... he's acting odd. Is he on drugs? Been drinking? Or just got out of Vietnam. Maybe he is acting like that just to vet close enough to attack you.. a trained person with a knife could kill anyone of us.. gun or not.

You have to protect yourself and the public. Maybe the guy was running toward the cop? Maybe a little girl eating her ice cream cone thinking she was watching a movie.
Police have to do what they have to. I also think that bart police have some of the best training now days after the oscar grant crap.

And no one will ever get my guns from my hands.. unless I sell them. This country is loosing site on its foundations everyday.
