hey

also remember an ecu reset is needed when you jump up the octane. without t, it will take a while for the ecu to pump up the timing.

good info pn tol tho. nasty stuff. but good for STi's and BADWRX's :P

Kurlee, thanx for the info. I've seen all that before... honestly most of it is old info. I don't mean "wtlw", I mean its outdated. Most of it applies to older materials technologies.

From what I've been learning, anything that can run ethanol, can pretty much run toluene and xylene as safely. And, lo and behold, 76 gasoline (and probabaly many others) contains ethanol. It seems to be the most popular replacement for MTBE. Modern fuel system materials seem pretty capable at handling these chemicals.

Also, from what I've been learning, its not the gasolines that eat the lines, but the lubricants can either swell or shrink seals, etc. You either get useless shrunken seals or swolen, busted seals depending which lubricant (I have to ask about this aain).s

I agree with BADWRX, the cans of the straight up toluene (or xylene) definitely gives results.

As far as josh's recommendation about the reset, I dunno how imperative this is. After the new juice makes its way throuh the lines, its only taken maybe one drive to work (12 miles) to get the ECU up to speed. By then, your milage may vary... how punny

Just one thing to remember Guys, the toluene you buy at Home Depot or Lowes is NOT pure and may have many of the products that you want to avoid. Buying "reagent grade" toluene from a chemical supply house may cost a little more, but at least you KNOW what you are buying.

Ravent,

are you sure about this? Its not some funny name name that looks or sounds like toluene or xylene. Its says it in big bold letters right on the can, not comments about additives or otherwise. Where did you get this info from?

do they sell it in smaller jugs (2-4 gallons) so you can just add it while getting normal gas?

mmboost,

I found this out years ago when buying other chemicals for work...unless it says reagent grade on the label, it can have xx% of "whatever" (grease, heavy metals...) in it, reagent grade cannot. I am not saying don't do it, but to know what you are getting. The same is true with foods, peanut butter can have xx% of bug parts and synthetic grease without them saying anything about it.

WARNING: If you are at a party and the people there are using NO2 for "fun" and the container does not say reagent grade (maybe they took it off someones car it is NOT something to take internally, only to be used on internal combustion engines. The Dentist does not fill up at the auto parts store.

nah, sniffing it is much more effective -- but equally stupid.

too bad Chemistry 101 never covered this sort of alchemy, i would have paid a hell of a lot more attention in class.
