For 2005, $5k for single/married filing separately, $10k for joint/qualifying widows, or $7300 for head of household.

...well with my example, you're right...5k/year and below means no tax. But if you work full time at minimum wage, you're over 5k/year. And anything over 5k/year does pay tax. Of course there are certain people who don't pay taxes...like HS kids that have jobs and wives that work only a small number of hours to supplement income. But I'm pretty damn sure that everyone who makes enough to either live on their own or to support any kind of family pays tax.
Just as an example, if you make 5k a year and work 30hrs/week (not even full time), you make about 3.50 an hour...way below any min wage I've seen.
