They wont invade until independence is declared, PRC made it clear if it was an attack would be immediate.

Sheer numbers would give the PRC an upper hand even with a terrific technological disadvantage and no real Navy.

One thing the US still has a surplus of is attack subs. The Chinese have purchased some decent subs but they are still way behind, and have limited surface and air ASW capability. USN SSN's plus diesels from the JMSDF and the RAN (Japan and Australia) could sink everything the Chinese own in short order. I doubt it would ever come to that. China and the USA have too much to gain from working together.
