I still contend that there are bigger political motivations, like the fact that the US has stated that we would assist in defending ROC.
And the fact that while they might ultimately be victorious, it would certainly be at a very high cost.
Which is one more reason that having US trade underwriting a 10-15%/yr economic boom for the PRC probably isn't in our long term best interest.

In the PRC's eyes, they are justified in taking Taiwan back, even by force. the only thing stopping them is inability. Failure to hold the island would be worse than the status quo.
And you're right about the economics. The PRC is a serious enigma, and until they are no longer Communist, we can't count them as a friend. Just a potential enemy that so far seems content to avoid real conflict.
