Indeed. The only real good news is that the PRC is incapable of invading the ROC physically. Those of you don't know which is which, you shouldn't be debating in here anyway.

An amazingly inept and uninformed statement.

BINGO! We capitalists make the PRC (oops, I gave it away...) stronger militarily with every dollar we spend. The beaty of sending money to a command economy that spends all of its hard currency on military hardware.

ROC that would be those few ancient people that still meet even though they're old as dirt.
Just a little bit stubborn you think.

Yeah but you should blame Bush 1, Clinton just maintained the course that Gerge Herbert Walker Prescott B. laid down.

How so? the straights aren't that big, a few air sorties could clear the way for landing parties, they don't need warships, they could just mass their troops on a couple dozen comandeered Cargo ships and they'd be all over that little island in no time.

Sheer numbers would give the PRC an upper hand even with a terrific technological disadvantage and no real Navy.

I just hope for all their sakes, and ours that it doesn't come to that, 'cause everyone would lose.

PRC views the ROC as a "rebel province" meaning, secessionists. If they had the military ability to physically take back the island, they would have done so long ago.

I still contend that there are bigger political motivations, like the fact that the US has stated that we would assist in defending ROC.

And the fact that while they might ultimately be victorious, it would certainly be at a very high cost.

Which is one more reason that having US trade underwriting a 10-15%/yr economic boom for the PRC probably isn't in our long term best interest.

In the PRC's eyes, they are justified in taking Taiwan back, even by force. the only thing stopping them is inability. Failure to hold the island would be worse than the status quo.

And you're right about the economics. The PRC is a serious enigma, and until they are no longer Communist, we can't count them as a friend. Just a potential enemy that so far seems content to avoid real conflict.

But that will hurt their dividends for at least one or two quarters!
